Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a Congressionally chartered, federally supported, non-profit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF). CAP is a volunteer organization with an aviation-minded membership that includes people from all backgrounds, lifestyles, and occupations. We perform three congressionally assigned key missions: emergency services, which includes search and rescue (by air and ground) and disaster relief operations; aerospace education for youth and the general public; and cadet programs for teenage youth. In addition, CAP has recently been tasked with homeland security and courier service missions. CAP also performs non-auxiliary missions for various governmental and private agencies, such as local law enforcement and the American Red Cross. The program is established as an organization by Title 10 of the United States Code and its purposes defined by Title 36. While CAP is sponsored by the USAF, it is not an operating reserve component under the Air Force or the federal government. Since CAP is not a reserve component of a uniformed service of the military and its membership is made up of volunteer civilians, CAP members are not subject to the laws governed by the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Membership in the organization consists of cadets ranging from 12 to 21 years of age, and senior members 18 years of age and up. These two groups each have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of pursuits; the Cadet program contributes to the development of the former group with a structured syllabus and an organization based upon United States Air Force ranks and pay grades, while the older members serve as instructors, supervisors, and operators. All members wear uniforms while performing their duties. Nationwide, CAP is a major operator of single-engine general aviation aircraft, used in the execution of its various missions, including orientation flights for cadets and the provision of significant emergency services capabilities. Because of these extensive flying opportunities, many CAP members become licensed pilots. The hierarchical and military auxiliary organization is headed by the National Headquarters (with authority over the national organization) followed by eight regional commands and 52 wings (each of the 50 states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico). Each wing supervises the individual groups and squadrons that comprise the basic operational unit of the organization. Description

We had a busy long day today!!

Our annual commander's call resulted in us being presented with the Col DeCamp Ground Team of the year and Ground team member of the year.

The General Ira Eaker Award, the second highest rank the Civil Air Patrol program offers, was presented to C/Lt Cols Andrew and Brayden Schrock.

The Eaker Award marks the completion of Phase IV of the CAP Cadet Program, recognizing sustained excellence in all four areas of cadet life: leadership, aerospace, fitness and character. The cadets must have also graduated from an academically-intensive leadership academy to qualify for this award.

Cadet of the Year was presented to C/Major Kori Howard.

We were also presented with coins designed by the National Guard for our assistance in distributing over 1.4 million meals. Members that served at the food banks will get one at a later date.

Our Cadet Advisory Council reps met today to elect new members for the new year.

Today was also our launch day for our rockets that were put together during our rocketry program organized and taught by SM Carpenter. We had 22 cadets successfully complete the rocketry program.

We are so incredibly proud of our hard working volunteers!! Keep up the good work and Congratulations!

This week we were invited to do our last rocket at our neighbor's hangar and to check out their new Pilatus.
We were treated to a talk on aviation and to check out the Pilatus inside and out. As if that wasn't enough, we also received pizza!!!
This was a thank you to the cadets for assisting the MAAC Foundation at their annual event. From one nonprofit organization to another, it is relationships like this that play a vital role in building strong communities.

For our 5th Tuesday, our cadets took over the world.

Our cadet officers moderated the game that resembles the board game "Risk". Jamaica won by shipping infected Nutella treats to other nations and someone was assassinated.

It was truly an eventful night in leadership.

This #GirlsinAviationDay, we celebrate the amazing women who paved the way and look forward to the next generation of female pilots. Women make up just 7% of the world's pilot population and Civil Air Patrol is committed to increasing diversity within the aviation field.

Last Saturday our cadets assisted the MAAC Foundation in their First Responder appreciation & Demonstration Day. They helped keep guests socially distanced and answered questions.

Created in 2016 through the McMillan Family Foundation, Inc. in partnership with the Indiana District 1 Firefighter Training Council, MAAC was developed to serve all public safety professionals in developing training opportunities for firefighters, police officers, and EMS. Set on over 5 acres, MAAC provides a variety of training for first responders at no cost to them or their agencies.

This THROWBACK THURSDAY we honor the service and legacy of US Naval aviator and Vietnam War POW Joe Kernan. The former South Bend mayor and two term Lt. Governor, 1996-2003 had served as governor of Indiana following the death of Governor Frank O'Bannon.
Kernan was shot down over North Vietnam on May 7, 1972 and was held for eleven month's in Hanoi's notorious prison.
In a statement yesterday, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, also a US Navy veteran, said that Kernan had unselfishly spent his lifetime honoring his oath the the country, community and state he loved.
Joe Kernan died yesterday in South Bend. He was 74.

Today was a great day to fly. We had 9 cadets get up in the air for their orientation flights.

CAP gives cadets the opportunity to experience the wonder of flight. Orientation flights are among the most exciting aspects of cadet life. Cadets get 5 orientation flights up to the age of 18.
