Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a Congressionally chartered, federally supported, non-profit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF). CAP is a volunteer organization with an aviation-minded membership that includes people from all backgrounds, lifestyles, and occupations. We perform three congressionally assigned key missions: emergency services, which includes search and rescue (by air and ground) and disaster relief operations; aerospace education for youth and the general public; and cadet programs for teenage youth. In addition, CAP has recently been tasked with homeland security and courier service missions. CAP also performs non-auxiliary missions for various governmental and private agencies, such as local law enforcement and the American Red Cross. The program is established as an organization by Title 10 of the United States Code and its purposes defined by Title 36. While CAP is sponsored by the USAF, it is not an operating reserve component under the Air Force or the federal government. Since CAP is not a reserve component of a uniformed service of the military and its membership is made up of volunteer civilians, CAP members are not subject to the laws governed by the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Membership in the organization consists of cadets ranging from 12 to 21 years of age, and senior members 18 years of age and up. These two groups each have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of pursuits; the Cadet program contributes to the development of the former group with a structured syllabus and an organization based upon United States Air Force ranks and pay grades, while the older members serve as instructors, supervisors, and operators. All members wear uniforms while performing their duties. Nationwide, CAP is a major operator of single-engine general aviation aircraft, used in the execution of its various missions, including orientation flights for cadets and the provision of significant emergency services capabilities. Because of these extensive flying opportunities, many CAP members become licensed pilots. The hierarchical and military auxiliary organization is headed by the National Headquarters (with authority over the national organization) followed by eight regional commands and 52 wings (each of the 50 states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico). Each wing supervises the individual groups and squadrons that comprise the basic operational unit of the organization. Description

Spotlight on our mid year graduate:

C/Major Desiree Lauridsen is a 5 year member of our squadron. In those years, she has had several positions such as flight sergeant, flight commander, Executive officer, Deputy Commander, and now our incoming Cadet Commander.
Her duty positions have included supply and aerospace education officer.
Major Lauridsen has been an integral part of our color guard team. She has been our team captain for our win at the regional level and helped us go to the National Cadet Competition where Indiana hadn't been in the past 20 years. Last year, she was also on the team that helped to win first place at INWG cadet competition. She is also a member of our ground team. She has instructed and directed at our Airman school. In addition, she has attended and staffed encampment at ILWG Spring encampment and INWG summer encampment. For this and other reasons, she has been awarded, the Daughter of American Revolution award and Air Force Association Award.
Outside of CAP, she has graduated from Lowell High School early last month and works at a local shop.
Major Lauridsen has decided to start flight lessons until she begins at Purdue University in the fall. We wish her well in her future endeavors and congratulate her on successfully completing high school.

Happy Holidays from U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star! As we carry out our Arctic mission this holiday season, protecting national security and U.S. sovereign interests and scientific research near the North Pole, we are keeping a sharp lookout for Santa and listening closely for jingle bells. Just like Coast Guard crews are always training, we heard Santa likes to take his reindeer team out for a few test flights before the big night. We will surely pass the word if we catch a glimpse!

Wishing everyone back home a magical holiday season, and be rest assured - #WeHaveTheWatch!

Indiana Wing, Civil Air Patrol

Civil Air Patrol - Great Lakes Region, Col. Matthew R. Creed, announced yesterday the National Commander has awarded the National Commander's Unit Citation to the Indiana Wing Civil Air Patrol for outstanding service to the state and to CAP during the COVID-19 crisis. While the wing was initially nominated for a Unit Citation, it was determined that the exceptional response by the entire Indiana Wing warranted an upgrade to the National Commander's Unit Citation instead. Col. Creed said of the Wing's efforts, "I can't express how proud I am of the wing's performance during this crisis, both in the community response during the award time period and in the amount and quality of activity that has taken place since."

Col. Robert Freese, Indiana Wing Commander added, "I am thrilled that the members of the Indiana Wing have been recognized by the National Commander for their efforts during the current pandemic. The recognition is well-deserved."

"Be grateful to others with words, service or goods and without preconditions. Unexpected blessings and rewards will be yours. More important another person's burden will be made lighter." - Colonel Gail S. Halvorsen

As Thanksgiving in North America approaches it is important not only to have gratitude for something, but also to have gratitude in the place/situation that you are in. In the accompanying photo our eye is quickly drawn to the C-54 on approach into Templehof. But, significantly notice what the children are standing on: a pile of rubble that once was a home. Even when standing on the broken bits of life, we can look up to see deliverance coming...and be grateful.

Yesterday we had a team of cadets compete in Cyberpatriot in the high school tier led by C/1st Lt Kaleb Bacztub for Round 1.

Even with the usual glitches, the team powered forward all morning and scored in the middle of all the scores with no penalties.

We are proud of our team and look forward to Round 2.
