Annually, we receive approximately 1,000 inquiries from residents in crisis. These cries for help are just the tip of the iceberg for keeping their households afloat. Urgent needs mask the root causes that keep these households in crisis. Together, we can address both. In 2023, we’re launching a new Community Navigator program to provide one-on-one assistance to those in crisis, guiding them to resources and helping them to become stable.

Izzy Orlando was the winner of AFP NWI Chapter’s Young Philanthropist award. She raised money through lemonade stands and art sales to support Lakeshore PAWS and the Boys and Girls Club. Though she is allergic to dogs, Izzy feels the next best thing to having a dog is to support them through PAWS.

Kasie Tenbarge, Chief Development Officer at United Way says, “She has donated to purchase Boys and Girls Club memberships for three students who couldn’t afford it. Izzy is an inspiring example for other youth and our community as a whole.”

Congrats, Izzy, on your tremendous achievement!

Injury Attorney Kenneth J. Allen of Allen Law Group has again stepped up to support United Way of Northwest Indiana’s Reading Buddies program, donating more than $22,000 as well as thousands in billboard promotion for the program.

Reading Buddies is a classroom motivation tool to encourage young students to practice their reading skills. The program provides stuffed animal buddies to more than 3,700 first and second graders. The buddies are incorporated into the reading curriculum of each classroom.

“Literacy is a keystone of success. So it makes good sense to help our children learn to read and write with confidence at the earliest possible age,” said Injury Attorney Allen. “Reading Buddies is just one of the many ways United Way of Northwest Indiana helps our kids grow up strong, healthy and successful. I am proud to continue supporting the program and the community as we have for many years now.”

Reading Buddies will be distributed to classrooms in Lake and Porter counties over the next couple of weeks. Allen will deliver buddies and read to students at Newton Yost Elementary School in Porter and Homer Iddings Elementary School in Merrillville, encouraging them to read to their new buddy daily.

For more information about Reading Buddies and to donate, visit unitedwaynwi.org.
