Since we have just celebrated our Independence, I wanted to take a moment to remind Veterans to sign up for our Honor Rewards program to receive discounts from participating businesses. Also, if any business would like to sign up to offer veterans discounts the process is incredibly easy. We have included a kiosk exclusively for the Honors Reward program in front of the Recorder’s office or you can sign up online. It only takes 2 minutes. We are looking to expand benefits into local restaurants that want to attract Veterans.

Porter County Auditor

It's July 1, and that means that a variety of new laws take effect in Indiana. One of these was prompted by H.E.A. 1427. Beginning today, the fee charged by county auditors for real estate conveyances, also known as deed transfer fees, will increase to $10. The money goes into a fund that pays for maintaining plat books.

On this day 124 years ago-February 20, 1895-African American social reformer, writer, orator, and statesman Frederick Douglass died at age 77. Born into slavery in Maryland, Douglass escaped to the North as a young man and became the most famous black man in the country with his 1845 autobiography "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave." He conferred with numerous presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, on the subjects of equal rights and black suffrage.

In 1881, President James A. Garfield appointed Douglass as Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia.

The County Recorder, in partnership with Fidlar Technologies, is
excited to announce a service for our local Veterans, named Honor Rewards.
With Honor Rewards, Veterans can sign-up at the Recorder’s office or online to receive an Honor Rewards card, which qualifies them for discounts and incentives at participating businesses in the local community. This service is being made available at no cost to the county and its taxpayers.

This service accompanies the Porter County Recorder’s Office dedication to our veterans. Our office serves as the State of Indiana’s recommended county backup for preserving original military discharge papers (including DD214) at no charge, along with providing free certified copies of previously recorded discharge papers.

Veterans are encouraged to record their DD214 or other forms of discharge papers if they have not already. This reward program has also received the support of the Porter County Veteran Services Office.

To sign up, all a veteran needs to do is visit www.honorrewards.com, click on Porter County, IN and fill out the form with details on when they served and with what branch of the armed forces. If an individual prefers to fill out the form in person instead of online they can visit the Recorder’s Office during business hours and the staff will assist them.

The service is completely free and once signed up the veteran can expect to receive their Honor Rewards ID card in the mail in 1-2 weeks.

Local businesses and retailers can participate in the service by contacting the Recorder’s office or using the Business Sign-Up link on www.honorrewards.com. By participating, their business name and a hyperlink to their business will be listed on the Honor Rewards website for Porter County and they also will be regularly mentioned in email blasts to current Honor Rewards members.

In addition, participating businesses will be provided with promotional materials like door stickers and flyers to promote their involvement.

For more information, contact us at 219-465-3465 or visit www.honorrewards.com

As I am getting more familiar with all the new roles as the County Recorder I wanted to begin to focus on getting our county veterans to record their discharge papers with the office and sign up for the HONOR REWARDS PROGRAM. Once your discharge is recorded (free) you are then signed up to get discounts through the community at participating businesses. If there are any business’s that would like to participate in this reward for our veterans please contact me. I am thinking that our business owners would all like to serve more veterans. 🇺🇸

National D-Day Memorial

On this day, June 6 in 1944, more than 150,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily fortified Normandy coastline to fight the forces of Nazi Germany. The landing included over 5,000 ships and 11,000 airplanes.

This Allied assault was possibly the largest amphibious assault in history. More than 9,000 soldiers were killed or wounded that day. The Normandy landings have been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe. It has also been referred to as the beginning of the saving of civilization from the tyranny of the Nazi regime.

Thank you to all of our WWII veterans who are alive and who have passed and to those who participated in that incredible crusade, infamously referred to as D-Day or Operation Overlord.

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.
On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an #ArmedForcesDay to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.
The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.
We honor and thank all members of our armed forces, past and present, for their sacrifice, commitment and excellence.

We are rapidly approaching the number "500" of veterans who have received our Honor Rewards community discount card!

We recently mailed out letters to any veterans who have registered but whose records could not be validated by our computer system. This doesn't mean we question your service, it simply means that your service discharge paperwork was not recorded in our office.

Since mailing these letters, 24 more veterans have successfully validated their Honor Rewards registration and their cards were mailed out to them last week!

To any veterans who have received this letter, please contact us and we will be happy to assist you in completing your registration.

To ALL veterans who have not checked out our Honor Rewards card, please do at http://honorrewards.com/?page_id=188

Porter County, IN - Official Website - Honor Rewards for Veterans

We have had an INCREDIBLE response to our Honor Rewards community discount program! Over 480 veterans have registered so far and we are receiving more registrations each day!

If you have registered online and have not received your Honor Rewards card yet, that indicates that your DD214 service record has not been recorded in our records system.

We have recently sent letters out to our veterans whose service records we cannot validate via our record system. If you received one of these letters, it is from our office, and below are two solutions to remedy this situation:

- Record your DD214 at our office. There is NO CHARGE to record your DD214! Your original will be returned to you upon completion of recording which can be done right at our counter and you may also receive certified copies at no charge for life. You can then realize the secure feeling of knowing that this record has been securely stored at your local Recorder’s Office should your original ever become lost or destroyed. This would be the best and preferred way to validate your registration, serving dual purposes for you.

- Provide Proof of Service via you VA card or other form of military ID. By showing us your military ID at our counter we can properly completer your registration.
Please contact us with any questions pertaining to the Honor Rewards program, or visit us at either

or our office website at http://www.porterco.org/index.aspx?NID=728
