Preventing mortgage fraud and identity theft is a top priority of your Sangamon County Recorder's office. The Recorder's office has made a conscious effort to be on the lookout for documents that may involve deed or mortgage related fraud. For your protection, consider subscribing to our "FREE" Property Fraud Alert website for real-time monitoring and notification of any potential fraudulent activity. Your security does matter!
Unfortunately, it's all too easy for a criminal to record a fraudulent deed making it appear as if they now own your home.
Once they've done this, they can use your name as collateral on a mortgage or even attempt to sell your home to an unsuspecting buyer.
Don't let this happen to you!
To sign up for this free service, go to: https://www.propertyfraudalert.com/select and click on "BEGIN HERE" to register. Complete the registration form and submit. The service will notify you if a document is recorded with your name. You will be given the option to be notified by either "Email" or by "Phone". Remember, this is a FREE service to you.

During the Vietnam era, a "Stand Down" was time for service members to break from combat to attend to personal needs like eating, bathing, or getting a haircut. Today, veterans of all eras are welcomed to obtain resources, benefits, and other helpful information from 35+ vendors in one, convenient location. Please bring a copy of your DD-214, Military ID, or VA Health Care Card to enter the event. As a supporter of all our military personnel, the Porter County Recorder's Office will be participating in this event. We will be recording any veteran's DD214 discharge papers for free. This will provide a reliable place that the veteran may easily retrieve their discharge papers when needed in the future. We will also be providing the option to sign up for the "HONOR REWARDS" program where veteran's receive discounts at local area businesses.

Graham Collins, a student at Valparaiso High School was elected "Recorder of the Day" today. VHS Student Government Day is always a blast for us to participate in!

This event coordinated by Valparaiso Community schools is a great chance for students to see government from the "other side of the counter," where elected or appointed student leaders fill various city and county political offices.

Graham fulfilled his role very well and it was a pleasure to meet him and several other government officials for the day!

We are very excited to move forward with this project!

It will provide the ability to remotely access all of our land records going back to 1836 along with providing complete backup security for all of these valuable records.

Once all of the records are digital, Harris said, they will be accessible from anywhere and not just the recorder’s office.

Governor Eric Holcomb signed HB1056 today, ending the requirement of BOTH a notarial acknowledgment AND a witness proof to record a document.

Commencing immediately, either a notarial acknowledgment OR a witness proof will be required to a record documents in the State of Indiana. By state law we will NOT require both.

The bill passed with broad, bipartisan support. It is effective immediately and provides protection for any documents recorded between July 1, 2020 and today that did not contain two notarial acts. Please consult your underwriter for further instruction.
