Excited to have Greg Simms speak to us this Monday!

This from Greg: I started the Porter County Su***de Prevention Task Force after the coroner came in front of the Porter County Council in 2020 for more money due to su***de autopsies. ( I did not know if you know that I am also a member of the County Council, I represent the 3rd District: which is Valpo) I asked if we as County officials are doing anything about the increase su***des in the County. No one spoke, so after the meeting I decided to form the task force. In the 3 years since inception, we have increased awareness of the getting help for su***de thoughts, we were part of the discussions to implement the new 988 crises hotline, we have literature that we hand out, we have been working on implementing a LOSS team for the county. ( this means Local Outreach for Su***de Survivors) When there is a su***de, a team of 4 people visit the scene and provide information and support for those left behind. We have 988 crises yard signs that we offer for free. We were also apart of a recent event at the Memorial Opra House called Live for Laughs. Two top-tier comedians came and entertained a packed house. Money is going for increase su***de awareness. We have another fundraiser November at the American Legion on Nov 5th. This is a concert with food, raffles etc. This event is going to help military su***des as well as more prevention efforts in the county.
I also implemented a Stop The Bleed program for the County. Since some people die by su***de by bleeding out, I felt it necessary to teach anyone who wants to learn how to Stop someone bleeding out before the help arrives. This is a free program and we offer our own Stop The Bleed kits for $20.00. I also do free AED training as well as basic CPR.

This past Monday’s meeting Valpo Rotary was a cookout at the Forest Park Rotary Shelter. Guest Speaker Kevin Nuppnau from Valpo Parks shared that The Rotary Club of Valparaiso, Indiana donated $3,000 towards the project in the 1950’s. Factoring in inflation that would be approximately $31,500 today! This project has been just one of many partnerships between the two organizations over the years.

Here is a little bit of about how the VNA Kibble Kitchen was founded:
If you aren’t familiar, VNA Meals on Wheels of Porter County helps homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities maintain their independence and nutritional well-being by delivering a hot, nutritious lunch with a wellness check. After learning that many of the clients were sharing their meals with their furry companions or were forced to rehome their pets because they couldn’t afford pet food, the idea of a Kibble Kitchen was born.

The VNA Meals on Wheels of Porter County Kibble Kitchen was founded in the Summer of 2021 and provides current Meals on Wheels clients with supplementary pet food and treats for their furry companions, at no additional cost to the client. The program has grown to serve 36 pets, and more are being added each week.

When: Tuesday Nov 29, 2022 ⋅ 5:30pm – 7:30pm (Central Time - Chicago)

Location: Martinis, 1004 Calumet Ave, Valparaiso, IN 46383, USA

This weeks Monday Meeting😁

Stephanie Swearington is the Project Director for the Insight Program at Porter Starke Services. The Insight program has been designed to help link people experiencing their first episode(s) of psychosis to mental health services. Her role is to educate the community about psychosis, and to help break the stigma around seeking help for mental health needs. She brings 14 years of experience in non-profit work with her, 7 of those years being in social services working with folks with a serious mental illness. She achieved her Master’s of Healthcare Administration in 2014 at Valparaiso University, and has worked on projects with for profit companies on process improvement, human resource management and operational strategies. She is passionate about serving the community through her board involvement at Opportunity Enterprises and The Valparaiso Creative Council, and hopes to be a great example to her children by modeling the importance of giving back to our community.

She wrote: I was trying to think of a good “out of context” quote and figured I would provide you two of my favorite quotes. Not sure if that is what you are looking for.

Here there are – “I don’t know where I am going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.” – David Bowie The second is, “Accept your past without regrets, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear.” -Nicholas Sansbury Smith

See you Monday Stephanie!
