While voting in person today, we ask that you please have some patience with your fellow Porter County voters as they cast their ballot. For some voters, especially our seniors, casting a long ballot on the new machines is a new process and it may take them longer. Casting your ballot is fundamental to our democracy. Voters will be allowed to take whatever time necessary to cast their vote.

Porter County Elections & Registration

When you go to vote you will need to bring with a photo ID that meets 4 criteria to be accepted for voting purposes:

1. It must display your photo.
2. It must display your name (that conforms to your voter registration record).
3. It must display an expiration date ( either current or having expired after the last General Election ). Please note: An ID issued by the US Department of Defense, a branch of the uniformed services, the Merchant Marine, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (or Veterans Administration), or the Indiana National Guard is not required to have an expiration date, or may state that the document has an "indefinite" expiration date.
4. Must be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. Government.

In most situations, an Indiana Driver's License, Indiana Photo ID Card, Military ID, or U.S. Passport is sufficient.

A student ID from an Indiana State School may only be used if it meets all of the above mentioned criteria. A student ID from a private institution may not be used.

If you are unable or unwilling to present ID that meets these requirements, you may vote with a provisional ballot. If you cast a provisional ballot, you have until 12 noon 10 days after the election to follow up with the Porter County Election Board and either present the necessary documentation or affirm one of the law's exemptions that apply to you.

Did you know there are different rules for different counties all throughout Indiana when it comes to Elections and Registrations? Different states have different election protocols and different counties in Indiana have different equipment, therefore things are different from county to county.

In Porter County, the Poll Clerks must initial the back of the ballots, during early vote they must also print and sign the front of the security envelope and write the precinct on the front of the envelope. The voter must also sign and date the front of the envelope during this time period. This is normal and standard procedures despite what you might have heard online from unverified sources.

UPDATE:
Yesterday, Tuesday, October 13th, 2020, the 7th Circuit reversed the lower court’s decision on the absentee-by-mail deadline. This means the current will law stand and absentee-by-mail ballots are to be received by the county election board no later than noon on November 3rd, 2020.

The code cite addressing the absentee deadline is IC 3-11.5-4-3.

Good Morning! We are aware of the recent decision in Common Cause vs Lawson by Judge Barker. This decision changes the deadline to return an Absentee by Mail ballot from Noon on Election Day to POSTMARKED by Election Day and delivered on or before November 13th.

This changes many things for Indiana and Porter County as we were originally set to certify the election on November 13th. As more information becomes available we will pass it on, until then this is the extent of the information we have been provided.

(Ind. Code § 3-14-3-16).
“Chute" means the area or pathway that extends fifty (50) feet in length, measured from the entrance to the polls. (Ind. Code § 3-5-210)
