On June 8, 2026, a sample collected from a La Salle County calf was confirmed to be NWS. This is the fifth confirmed case in Texas.

The existing infested zone in La Salle will be expanded to reflect movement restrictions and surveillance around the new case, and the infested zone in Gillespie County can be viewed on the TAHC interactive map: https://bit.ly/NWS-ZoneMap

Animal owners in and around these areas should continue to implement wound prevention practices and promptly report suspicions.

Today, the Culberson County Office of Emergency Management would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Offices in Culberson and Hudspeth Counties for hosting an informative New World Screwworm Question & Answer Session at the Hudspeth County Courthouse.

The meeting brought together local ranchers and agricultural stakeholders to discuss the latest information regarding the New World Screwworm and its potential impacts on our region. We appreciate the participation and expertise provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Culberson County Office of Emergency Management, the Hudspeth County Office of Emergency Management, and the Texas Animal Health Commission.

These collaborative efforts are essential to ensuring our communities remain informed, prepared, and ready to respond to emerging agricultural and animal health concerns. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to today’s discussion.

On June 5th, a sample collected from a 30-day-old calf in Zavala County was confirmed to be New World screwworm (NWS). This is the second confirmed case of NWS in Texas, and is located within the existing infested zone. Animal health officials are actively working the case and continuing to expand fly trapping and surveillance efforts to identify additional flies in the area.

Animal owners and livestock producers in Texas should actively monitor their animals and quickly treat and cover any wounds. This area is currently under movement restrictions through the Executive Director Order issued on June 3rd.
