🚨 Van Horn – We’re Back on the Chopping Block. Again.

Two weeks ago, we warned you: this is bigger than politics. It’s about progress.

Once again, your entire Van Horn Economic Development Corporation (VHEDC) board has been placed on the City Council agenda for removal—without cause, without evidence, and without a plan.

Let that sink in: the volunteer board responsible for real, tangible progress is being targeted—again.

🧾 And yet, since that last meeting:

• We hand-delivered agendas to council members who demanded “transparency”—and they still didn’t attend.
• We updated our bylaws to allow those very council members to attend executive sessions—and they still chose not to show.
• We created new, non-voting liaison positions for city council members to increase oversight and collaboration.
•We informed your City Council members that we are in the middle of a full, active audit—approved by those very same council members requesting another. This isn’t about transparency—it’s clear they either aren’t paying attention or are choosing to ignore the facts.
• We even worked with the city to offer VHEDC-owned land for the urgently needed third water pressure zone to help solve a citywide issue.

We’ve done everything they’ve asked. And more. And yet—here we are.

👉 Meanwhile, here’s what’s at risk if this board is wiped out again:

• A major affordable housing and rental development is underway—complete with vital infrastructure upgrades funded through strategic MUD agreements and external sources. This is a huge win for taxpayers, as the financial responsibility shifts to the developer, not the city. With home prices starting at just $80,000, this project is key to helping current residents stay in Van Horn, preparing for future growth, and attracting new families to live, work, shop, and build their lives in our community.
• Continued revitalization efforts on Broadway and around town. Including REOPENING the FLIP Grant as we are actively accepting applications and approving them this month.
• A new community center, event center and business incubator that’s bringing opportunity back to local entrepreneurs.
• Active partnerships with new businesses ready to open their doors THIS MONTH. Some who have already opened their doors like KD Fitness.
• An airport development plan that brings revenue back into Van Horn and Culberson County—including 8% revenue sharing, fuel taxes, and protections. Your VHEDC even assited identifying and mitigating the dangerous fuel spill that was going on for years which was less than a mile away from your city water supply.

Ask yourself this:

🛑 Why would your elected leaders want to stop all this? Why now? Why without a plan?

Van Horn deserves continuity, not chaos.
Progress, not power plays.
Community, not control.

If council members want new board leadership, fine—but let us continue operations until a transition can occur responsibly. Why force instability? Why threaten development?

📢 We need you. Again.
Come to City Hall this Monday, June 9th at 7:00 PM. Speak during Public Comment. Show up early and sign up! Make your voice heard.

Tell your leaders:
You don’t erase progress.
You build on it.
And you work with the people who show up, not against them.

📣 Share this post. Tag your neighbors. Tag your council members. This is your town.

Let’s move Van Horn forward—together.

🎉 We’re thrilled to welcome KD Fitness to Van Horn! 🏋️‍♂️💪

As Van Horn’s only public gym, KD Fitness marks an exciting milestone for our community—promoting health, wellness, and local entrepreneurship all in one. We’re incredibly proud to see another new business open its doors, and even more excited to watch the progress unfold.

The Van Horn Economic Development Corporation is committed to supporting small business growth, and KD Fitness is a perfect example of the positive direction our town is heading.

🌟 Thank you to EVERYONE who came out today to support the Van Horn Economic Development Corporation (VHEDC)! 🙌💙

Your presence wasn’t just noticed—it was FELT. Today showed the true strength of our community 💪—from the youth we inspire 👧👦, to the jobs we’re creating 💼, to the fresh energy we’re bringing to Van Horn ✨. This is what real progress looks like, and it starts with YOU. 🫶

🎥 This was a long meeting, but I highly, highly encourage our community to watch the video, hear the viewpoints, and keep asking your elected officials the tough questions. 🗣️✅

Without feedback, we can’t transform this organization—so thank you for being part of this process. Your voice matters, and your involvement is how we build a better future together. 🌱💬

We hope the requested tabling of the vote to remove the Board of Directors 🛑 allows time to reflect on everything shared and to work toward a more united, community-driven path forward 🤝.

With gratitude,

The VHEDC Board of Directors:
Cody Shafer, President
Michael Garibay, Vice President
Leanna Bell, Secretary
Yolanda Urias

🚨 Van Horn – This Is Bigger Than Politics. This Is About Progress.

Under Texas Local Government Code §§ 501.062, 504.051, and 505.051, a City Council can remove EDC board members without cause. As your city has done in the past, wiping out entire boards.
But just because it’s legal—doesn’t mean it’s right.

It has now been confirmed that your re-elected Councilman Lyndon McDonald has requested that the ENTIRE Van Horn Economic Development Corporation (VHEDC) board be removed—without justification or evidence of wrongdoing. This request is on the agenda for this Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Let’s be clear:

This board has done everything legally, ethically, and transparently.

We have passed every audit—with the previous and current City Council directly involved in our oversight.

We’ve brought in external auditors, filed state affidavits for any and ALL conflicts, and retained a top-tier law firm to ensure compliance at every step.

This is not about governance. This is about personal feelings and political control.

So before they try to erase the people working for you—ask yourself:

What has this board really done wrong? Or… what have we done right?

• Created and retained local jobs while helping fund over 15 local businesses.
• Secured over 200 acres to guarantee community-first development and affordable housing currently underway.
• Brought in new business, with FOUR more set to open next month including a gym, food/drink spots, auto detailing, and a photography studio. All NOW at RISK!
• Developed and are opening a community event center, shared space, and business incubator to ensure small businesses thrive.
• Granted $150,000+ in FLIP revitalization funds to improve signage, paint, and facades along Broadway.
• Lit up Broadway with brand new streetlights
• Granted $100,000+ in lighting improvements to the Rodeo Grounds
• Supported our local youth with sponsored events including the Féria Family Day and investment in their future
• Identified jet fuel leaking into our ground, forcing accountability, uncovering violations, and protecting OUR health
• Cleaned up old corruption, holding past board members accountable, and made sure YOUR voice is finally heard
• Generated a new revenue stream at the airport for the town and county to ensure progress doesn’t stop. Which includes bringing back fuel tax dollars to the community, and negotiating an 8% revenue share with the community!

All of this—done by a fully volunteer board, including the President. We’ve shown up. We’ve done the work. We’ve followed every rule. And now they want to wipe it all away.

So we ask again:
WHY? What is the real reason?

Because progress threatens power.
Because doing the right thing steps on the wrong toes.
Because some people would rather cling to control than lift up a community.

This type of leadership is unethical, questionable, and unacceptable.

If the community believes change is needed—let the board lead that conversation with transparency, not political ambush.

🗣️Now we need you.
• Show up Tuesday at City Hall.
• Call your elected officials.
• Demand answers. Demand facts. Demand integrity.

Spread the word. Share this post. Show up. Speak out.

Van Horn is finally transforming—don’t let them turn it back.
