Today, we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Memorial Day is more than a long weekend โ€” it is a time to reflect on the courage, dedication, and selflessness of those who gave their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

As we gather with family and friends, we encourage everyone to take a moment to remember our fallen heroes and the families who continue to carry their legacy.

From all of us at the Van Meter Fire Department, thank you to those who served and especially to those who never made it home.

We wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Today, the Van Meter Fire Department is honored to help celebrate the Van Meter High School Class of 2026 as they prepare to take one of the biggest steps of their lives. ๐Ÿš’๐ŸŽ“

In just a little while, our graduates will make their way through town surrounded by the support of a community that is incredibly proud of them. Years of hard work, late nights, challenges, memories, and accomplishments have all led to this moment.

To the Class of 2026 โ€” wherever life takes you next, carry with you the values that make this community strong: hard work, resilience, kindness, and service to others. Van Meter will always be cheering you on.

We encourage the community to come out, celebrate, and help us show these graduates just how proud we are of everything they have accomplished.

Congratulations, Class of 2026 โ€” your future is just beginning! ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿšจ Iowa Fire Weather Alert โ€“ Red Flag Warning Wednesday ๐Ÿšจ

Iowa will be dealing with critical fire weather conditions on Wednesday as a powerful west wind combines with extremely dry air and dormant grasses across the state. This is the type of setup where fires can start easily and spread rapidly in a matter of minutes.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for much of central, north central, and south central Iowa from 10 AM to 7 PM, with a similar warning in place for parts of northeast Iowa from Noon to 7 PM.

Winds will be the biggest concern, blowing from the west at 25 to 35 mph with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph. At the same time, humidity levels will drop into the low teens and 20% range, creating an environment where vegetation can ignite quickly.

The National Weather Service urges everyone to avoid outdoor burning and use extreme caution with anything that could produce a spark. Under these conditions, any fire that develops will likely spread out of control fast.
