Important Safety Reminder: Operation Back to School
As the new school year for Craven County schools begins on August 24, 2026, our office is officially kicking off “Operation Back to School” next week.
With students returning to classrooms, drivers will soon notice an increase in school buses on the road and children crossing streets. Because students will be excited on their first day and may not always pay attention, the responsibility falls on all of us as drivers to do our part.
Key Driver Safety Reminders
Slow Down: Reduce your speed and drive with extra caution in residential areas and school zones.
Stay Alert: Look both ways carefully to ensure distracted children do not unexpectedly dart out into traffic.
Watch for Buses: Expect frequent stops and give school buses ample room.
Sheriff's Office Enforcement & Support
To help ensure everyone stays safe:
Random Patrols: Deputies will randomly follow school buses along their routes to and from schools.
Stationary Monitoring: Deputies will maintain a stationary presence in school zones to monitor traffic and ensure safe driving habits.
School Resource Officers: SROs are prepared to welcome students back, provide a secure environment, and serve as positive mentors.
Please join us in making this a safe, smooth, and successful school year for every student in our community!
