Heading to a local lake this weekend? Know before you go!

Currently, there are no advisories for local waterbodies. But conditions at Round Lake in Camas and Vancouver Lake are poor.

A bloom of harmful algae developed and then dissipated at Round Lake on Thursday. And potentially harmful algae were dispersed in the water at Vancouver Lake. We are collecting samples from both lakes to test toxin levels and will have results next week.

Harmful algae blooms can appear suddenly as lake conditions change. While recreating in the lakes, be sure to:
• Avoid contact with areas of floating scum while swimming
• Keep kids away from floating scum
• Do not boat or kayak in areas of scum
• Avoid fishing in areas of scum
• Do not let pets go into or drink the water (or eat clumps of scum on shore)

Parked cars heat up quickly. The temperature inside can increase by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes!

Use these tips to make sure your child doesn’t accidentally get left in a vehicle:

• Always check the back seat.

• Keep a stuffed animal or other memento in the front seat as a visual reminder that your child is in the back.

• If your routine changes, call to make sure your child arrived safely.

• Don’t let children play inside cars.

Looking for a place to swim? Clark County has three designated swim beaches – Vancouver Lake, Klineline Pond and Battle Ground Lake!

These swim beaches have features that can help prevent drowning and illness. Things like a roped-off swimming area, gradually sloped banks and restrooms.

Swimming in rivers or other lakes may be allowed, but it isn’t recommended. They may have fast currents, sudden drop-offs or rocks below the surface of the water that can be dangerous.

Public Health routinely monitors the swim beaches and posts advisories if the water is unsafe for recreating. Visit our website for information about current advisories:

Kids love the freedom of riding a bike. Helping them learn the rules of the road keeps them safer as they explore.

Use your judgment when deciding whether older children are ready to ride in traffic. Consider:

• The amount of traffic where they'll be riding

• Their maturity and ability to stay focused on traffic

• How well they follow the rules of the road and use hand signals

Sharing the road works best when everyone knows what the symbols on the road mean.

Pay attention to the different colors and markings. They provide important safety information, like where bikes should ride, when cars must yield, and where it’s safe to pass.

Heading to a local lake this weekend? Know before you go!

Currently, there are no advisories at local lakes. But make it a habit to check our website for the latest information on advisories before recreating in local waters: clark.wa.gov/public-health/public-beaches.

To stay safe when swimming, boating or recreating near water, keep these tips in mind:

• Lakes and rivers are still cold enough to shock and immobilize even the strongest swimmers. Rivers are still high and swift from rain and snow melt and may be carrying debris.

• Children should always wear life jackets. Inflatable toys do not keep children safe.

• Adults, teens and children should wear life jackets while boating, using a personal watercraft, inner tubing or while using other water sports equipment. By law, children 12 years and younger must wear a life jacket or vest on all vessels 18 feet or smaller.
