Ameriyana ( WHY)
My name is Amariyana Berry. I currently work in the Vancouver School District as a District Resource Officer, Coach, and Tutor. I am passionate about volleyball and have taught it for a few years now, including coaching girls in the Vancouver School District. I am emailing you today because your organizations were listed as potential agencies that may want to help me. I am currently working on opening a non-profit volleyball club for girls 12 - 17, specifically minority youth. As a coach who has taught kids in both the Salmon Creek area as well as the Heights area, one thing I realize is some girls have a huge advantage and others do not.
I want to encourage underrepresented youths to develop and improve their volleyball/ athletic skills, while focusing on building confidence, self-esteem, discipline, commitment and leadership. It’s a healthy activity and nowadays many of our youths and their families, do not have the financial ability or physical abilities to excel when they join volleyball teams at school, often times being cut and looked over. This club will help our minority youth learn the fundamentals and skills to succeed in the sport. This opportunity will be provided to youth girls ages 12 – 17 years of age. By learning and developing the necessary skills and love for volleyball, they can equal out the playing field and have a true chance at scholarships and more college opportunities.
