Welcome back to Question of the Week! This week's question is...

Are there any books you haven't been able to finish? Why not?

Amber: "Here's the thing. When I pick up a book, I'm usually very intentional about my picks. Admittedly, I can power through an okay or bad book. Alright, I'll be frank. Booktok got to me. I picked up a copy of the Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. It was a book that many had recommended, and the internet seemed to really like it. It is a YA heist novel that is supposedly very character driven. Everything about this book should have worked for me. I tried to start reading it several times and stopped at about the same time, just a few chapters in. I don't know why, but when I was reading this book, my eyes glazed over. Something wasn't connecting. At first I chalked it up to the plethora of characters and names, and the fact that the reader is dropped into the world. These are things that aren't usually roadblocks for me. I've read classic literature with more extensive character lists, and I've read a ton of fantasy and sci-fi with harsh world drops. Sometimes, books just don't click. I have nothing against the author, and I don't tell people not to read her novels. I wouldn't leave a bad review, and I know I am in the minority for not liking this book. It simply isn't for me, and that's okay."

Amber's pick: Vicious by V. E. Schwab

"This is a story about revenge and madness. Two boys, smart, but without sense, delve into the theory that superpowers can be created in people who have near death experiences. After a successful experiment ends in Eli gaining the power of regeneration, Victor wants powers of his own. But Eli's brush with death and new power has changed his perspective of the experience, and what it means to be an 'extra ordinary' person, or, EO. Victor goes against his friend and gets a gruesome power of his own, but at a much higher cost. Years later, Eli is on a mission to end EOs, and Victor is on a mission to end Eli. This book has so much great drama, tension, and one of the freshest takes on the 'superhero' genre. If you enjoy morally grey/morally corrupt main characters, questions of ethics, and some sci-fi, this book is for you."

One Book One Coast is a collective of 150 libraries in Washington, Oregon, and California to form the world's largest book club. Our selection for this year, They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, illustrates his extraordinary, courageous story of being forcibly incarcerated with his family as a young child due to Executive Order 9066. He shows the reader what he saw, and how he continued to process this historic event as an actor, activist and public speaker in the decades that followed.

Join a livestream of an author talk with George Takei at Vancouver Community Library on Sunday, May 31, from 2 - 4 pm or register to join online from home at https://library-lacounty-gov.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Ek6Fa2kxSjq1vs_BvlyHRg #/registration

More library. More often.

Exciting news: Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries will roll out expanded hours beginning June 1! This expansion is part of a Levy Lid Lift commitment to increase access and reflects community feedback, including results from the district’s engagement survey.

Each county will have a library open on Sundays, and nearly all branches will offer additional hours. Visit our website to find your library's new hours: https://www.fvrl.org/new-hours/

Welcome back to Question of the Week! This week's question is...

What do you do with your books when you finish them?

Harry: "Answering this question is more complicated than I thought it would be. The answer depends on the type of book and where I happen to be reading when I finish. If I'm reading on my iPad, then I close my tablet and the file for the book might stay there forever. If it happens to be a book I'm reading from Libby or a graphic novel from Hoopla, then those bits conveniently disappear when my borrowing time is over. If I finish reading a book in bed, then I will put it on the stack of books next to my bed that I promise I will shelve in an orderly fashion at some future time. If the book happens to be one of my favorites, then it might never leave the stack next to my bed! If I finish reading a book in my car, then it might hang around in the center console or on the back seat until I discover that I have too many books in my car and I clear them out. If I finish a book at work, then I put it away in my cabinet where it is immediately buried by other work things and I completely forget about it until I excavate my shelves. Fortunately, the physical location of the book is only part of the story. What I do with all my books when I finish them is think about them, remember them, and cherish them. Sometimes, I even reread them."
