Friends and Neighbors

Our May's Second Saturday work party is almost upon us - May 9, 2026, 9am to noon.

This work party is going to be a little different this month - lots going on! The Jane Weber Arboretum has a table at the Vancouver Farmers Market and we will be working there, 9am to 3. Stop by and say hi! Grab a brochure, ask us questions about the Arboretum. Let us tell you why volunteering is a great experience! With all that said, there won't be any big projects tackled this month, but we had a great Arbor Day Celebration on the 28th of April. We have a handout from Bartlett Tree Experts about the importance of planning for and maintaining trees in your yard.

AND ....

Our annual open house is next Saturday, May 16 from 1pm - 4. Light refreshments will be served. I'll send out another email for that. Soon.

The weather will be good, whatever you decide to do. Enjoy it.

Join us this Tuesday April 28th
The Jane Weber Arboretum Nonprofit is excited to have Bartlett Tree Experts participate in this year’s Arbor Month Celebration, April 28th, 11:30 on the front porch of the historic John Stanger House 9215 SE Old Evergreen Highway. Join George Nickols and Ryan Fay for an engaging, educational presentation focused on helping homeowners make informed, confident decisions about the trees in their landscapes.
In addition to hearing from our guests
we will be adding to the Don Bonker Grove as a Arbor Day Ceremony by plant a tree honoring our Volunteer of the year Anne Devereaux.
During this session, George and Ryan will walk attendees through the full lifecycle of caring for their trees—from the moment they bring home a new tree to long‑term maintenance that supports growth, beauty, and resilience. Key topics will include:
• Selecting and Establishing New Trees
Guidance on choosing the right tree for your property and ensuring proper planting techniques for a strong start.
• Maintenance and Plant Health Care Tips
Practical, science‑based advice on watering, pruning, soil management, and protecting your trees from pests and environmental stress.
• Understanding Larger Tree Risks Near Structures
How to recognize when mature trees may pose risks to homes or other structures, and when to call in a professional arborist for assessment or mitigation.
Bartlett Tree Experts is proud to support Arbor Month and has for many years been a great partner with the Jane Weber Arboretum Nonprofit. They have identified and assessed our trees and the famous Hudson Bay Old Apple at Fort Vancouver help our community cultivate safer, healthier, and more vibrant landscapes. We look forward to seeing you tree lovers there!

Last Saturday John Woolley longtime Master Gardener volunteer demonstrated the techniques of pruning the Italian plum trees free to the public. These trees have been on the John Stanger Homestead for many years. Many may recall that Clark County was famous and known for being the Prune Capital of the Pacific Northwest. The many plum trees on what is now the Jane Weber Arboretum, a Nonprofit was originally the Stanger Family Farm, homesteaded in 1849. These trees are believed to be direct descendants of that period in our history. Join us to learn more interesting early Clark County history right here inside our historic city. We make this possible through volunteers, consider joining us and sharing your passion and skills. Thank you Jane and Dr Weber for donating this historic property to our community
