This week's Employee Spotlight is Corrections Case Manager II, Destiny Pease. Destiny's been with the department since December 2002.
What led you to choose your current career path?
I was looking for a job with decent pay and benefits. After working for a while, I decided I wanted this to be a career for me and not just a job.
Who has been your biggest influence in your career?
There has been many people who has influenced me through my 23 years with the department so its hard just to choose one. Todd Moore, Jim Immel, David Leake, James Parrot are some of my past supervisors who made a difference in my career. They encouraged me to be the best that I can be and to treat everyone as you want to be treated. They helped me become the team player that I am today and to always remember where I came from. Even after promoting to case manager, I have continued to work Overtime with the custody staff and help bridge the gap between custody and non-custody. I do it not only for the extra money for all those vacations but because I remember the days of working the mandatory 16 hours and being exhausted.
Whatās the best advice you have ever received?
Integrity means everything- even if no one is looking.
First Job ever, what did you learn from it?
Like most of us, one of my first jobs was in the fast-food industry. I learned to be accurate and dependable while working in a fast paced environment. Attendance was also important and missing work would cause other staff to work overtime. This helped shape me into the person I am today and rarely missing work. Taking pride on very little unscheduled absences is a valuable asset to possess.
Most meaningful feedback you have received.
You have the ability to do the job, you just lack the confidence. Breathe, take time to process and take lots of notes along the way.
What advice would you give to new employees?
*Be on time to your post! The staff that you are relieving wants to go home on time as well. And on the same note: try to keep unscheduled absences to a minimum. This will help staff from working more overtime than is what is needed.
*If you arenāt sure about something, ask another staff member. Lots of us are willing to share the knowledge we have, but often times are never asked.
*Donāt be afraid to the tell the offenders āNoā. It's easier to turn a No into a Yes than the other way around.
*Use the resources that are provided to us- Mental health is important and if you need assistance- get in touch with a PACT member or a supervisor who can help you get the assistance you need. You are important! Take care of yourself!
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Alaska- staying in a dome tent at night falling asleep watching the Northern Lights.
Egypt- to see the Egyptians Tombs and pyramids
Italy- lots of history there and Italian food is my favorite.
Any place tropical- because who doesnāt like sunshine, sitting on beach listening to the ocean and reading a good book.
