This free class will be held June 13, 2026 at 9am located at the Buchanan County Circuit Courtroom. Class size will be limited to 50 people. The class will last approximately 3 hours.
Sign up for the concealed handgun class can be done by phone by calling the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office at 276 935-6409 during business hours. If there is no answer, leave a message and you will be added to the class roster. Once the 50 person limit is reached, no further registrations will be accepted. You must be a Buchanan County resident and show a form of identification to enter the class.

******What you need to bring to the class******
A form of identification such as a Driver’s License/ ID Card

******What you DO NOT bring to the class******
A firearm of any kind. You will be checked for weapons. A sampling of fi****ms for training will be provided.
Ammunition of any kind. You will be checked for ammunition.
After successful completion of the class, certificates of completion will be handed out. Call 276 935-6409 during business hours to register.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic line of duty death of a deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the injury of a second deputy in last night’s shooting. Our thoughts and prayers are with the fallen deputy’s family, the injured deputy, the entire Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, and all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. We ask everyone to keep these officers and their loved ones in their prayers during this difficult time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At approximately 9:26 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway.

Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
