UPDATE: Ms. Day has been located safe .

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance in locating Stephanie Day, who has been reported missing.

Ms. Day was last confirmed to be in the Gary area of McDowell County on or around July 25, 2026. She was last seen riding a bicycle. Ms. Day was also known to frequently visit the Maybeury and Northfork area of McDowell County.

Anyone who has seen Ms. Day, had any contact with her, or has information about her current location is urged to contact the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office at (304) 436-8523 or call 911.

The Sheriff’s Office appreciates any information the public can provide.

Buchanan County Sheriff's Office Announces Purchase of Body Worn Cameras

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office is pleased to announce the purchase of body worn cameras for our deputies. The cameras will be implemented over the coming months as deputies complete training, equipment is installed, and the necessary policies and procedures are finalized.

The addition of body worn cameras is an important investment in public safety and reflects our continued commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism. The cameras will provide an objective record of law enforcement interactions, assist with criminal investigations and prosecutions, help resolve citizen complaints, and document the professional service our deputies provide to the citizens of Buchanan County each day.

This project was made possible largely through taxpayer dollars that were available because of responsible budgeting and careful management of Sheriff's Office resources. We believe it is important to make sound financial decisions while continuing to invest in equipment and technology that benefits both our deputies and the community we serve.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors for their continued support of the Sheriff's Office and their commitment to public safety. Their cooperation and partnership were instrumental in making this project possible.

I also want to thank Buchanan County Commonwealth's Attorney Nikki Stiltner for her cooperation and assistance throughout this process. Her support and collaboration helped make this investment a reality.

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office remains committed to providing professional, transparent, and accountable law enforcement while equipping our deputies with the tools they need to effectively serve and protect the citizens of Buchanan County. SHERIFF'S STATEMEMT ON THE 2ND AMENDMENT

I have received a significant number of questions from residents regarding several new firearm laws scheduled to take effect in Virginia today, including House Bill 217, Senate Bill 749, and Senate Bill 727.

Over the past several weeks, I intentionally chose not to issue a public statement before July 1. That decision was deliberate. Given the number of legal challenges filed and the rapidly changing status of the litigation, I believed it was more responsible to allow the judicial process to develop rather than make premature statements before the courts had an opportunity to act. Residents deserve decisions based on facts and legal rulings, not speculation or political reactions.

As I have stated previously, law enforcement officers do not determine whether a law is constitutional. That responsibility rests with the judicial branch. Our role is to uphold and enforce the law while exercising sound judgment, fairness, and discretion in carrying out our duties.

We are aware that multiple legal challenges have been filed, including an injunction that has temporarily prevented these laws from taking effect while the courts consider their constitutionality. I share many of the concerns that have been expressed regarding the constitutional implications of these laws and believe the judicial process should be allowed to run its course before otherwise law-abiding citizens are subjected to criminal enforcement under statutes that remain under judicial review.

Accordingly, I have directed that the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office will exercise lawful discretion and will not pursue enforcement actions under these new gun laws while the courts consider the pending constitutional challenges. I believe it is prudent to allow the judicial process to proceed and to receive clear legal guidance from the courts regarding the validity and constitutionality of these statutes before determining any long term course of action.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office will continue to monitor ongoing litigation and carefully review any decisions issued by the courts. We look forward to receiving clear legal guidance regarding these laws and their constitutionality.

I remain committed to serving the citizens of Buchanan County with professionalism, common sense, and respect for the constitutional rights of our citizens.
