A few days before each school year starts, the entire VISD staff gather to get on the same page and to honor the annual Doors of Opportunity Award recipient.

The award, first established in 1998, goes out to a VISD staff member who best exemplifies someone who goes beyond their job description to open doors and maximize students' potential. Nominations come in from fellow staff members and VISD families.

This year's winner is none other than VHS Office Manager Jackie Merrill. A steady and familiar presence in the high school front office since 2019, it is hard to imagine a school day functioning properly without Jackie behind the scenes ensuring it all works out.

For the 2026/27 school year, Vashon PTO has committed to placing an order for school supplies for each student at Chautauqua. Every kid, day one, the same supplies for every child, so there's no gap and no scramble in the classroom.
Why we're doing the whole school:
-Teachers get a break
Supplies arrive sorted and labeled, so teachers can focus on welcoming kids.
-Less cost, less waste
Bulk pricing retail can't match, tax-free, and far less packaging.

The PTO runs this as a service for Chautauqua families. You're buying the same supplies in bulk, at cost, and we back the program so no kid is left out.

Our sincere hope is that we can keep this program going year to year, and to do that, we need families who are able to contribute to do so (and soon, as we write the check in mid-July!). We want your input!

We are in the process of is gathering community feedback to help inform long-range facilities planning and potential future capital improvement projects. This survey is intended to collect community input only. No decisions have been made regarding a future bond measure, project list, or funding amount. Responses will help the District better understand community priorities, concerns, and preferred communication methods. Estimated completion time: 5-8 minutes.

Graduation weekend is right around the corner and the weather report could not be more perfect to send off our amazing Class of 2026 into the greater world!

Our 5th graders had an amazing experience at Camp Sealth this year! A heartfelt thank you to Alex Craighead, Duncan Endava, the One Village team, our VHS mentors, Camp Sealth staff, and our 5th grade teachers, who all helped make this such a meaningful and memorable experience for our students.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Vashon Schools Foundation for helping subsidize camp costs so that all students could attend, regardless of financial circumstances. Their support helped ensure that every 5th grader had the opportunity to participate in this important experience of learning, growth, connection, and belonging.

The VISD Band Program is hosting their end-of-the-year Pops Concert! The concert will include performances from the McMurray Mustang Band, McMurray Symphonic Band, VHS Wind Ensemble, and concludes with the MegaBand. Selections to be performed by each ensemble are selected by the students themselves, each with their own unique theme.

The performances start at 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, June 4, in the VHS Gym.

A by-donation Bake Sale will also be offered prior to and post concert to support the VHS Band. Cash is preferred.

We are so excited to share that the La Chispa Club at Vashon Island School District was selected to receive a student-led grant through The Harbor School Vashon “Island Impact” program!

Harbor School teachers Zach and Emma, guided students through a week of service learning focused on giving back to our island community. As part of the experience, students raised funds and reviewed grant applications from local nonprofits supporting youth on Vashon.

We were honored to apply on behalf of La Chispa Club and even more excited to share that our proposal was selected! 💛

The grant will help support a college exploration field trip for La Chispa youth, giving students the opportunity to visit nearby colleges, imagine their futures, and explore possibilities for higher education and career pathways.

A huge thank you to Zach & Emma and the Harbor School students for investing in local youth and creating such a thoughtful opportunity for community impact. We are incredibly grateful for your support and belief in the La Chispa students.
