Vashon Health Care District

Vashon Health Care District King County Public Hospital District 5 is the Vashon Health Care District, created by a vote of 70% of island residents in November 2019.

The Vashon Health Care District promotes the health of the residents of Vashon and Maury by supporting accessible quality health care through community partnerships, shared decision-making, transparency and responsible stewardship of resources. WHAT IS A PUBLIC HOSPITAL DISTRICT? Public Hospital Districts are community-created, governmental entities authorized by state law to deliver health servic

es—including but not limited to acute hospital care—to district residents and others in the districts’ service areas. Owned and governed by the local citizens, hospital districts tailor their services to meet the unique needs of their individual communities. The Vashon Health Care District has five elected Commissioners who are the governing body of the district. Along with the district Superintendent, Eric Jensen, they make all of the decisions about the operations of the district.

This year, VHCD helped fund three community circles on Vashon through Journeymen and Womenholdthekey: Boys Council, Men's Council, and Women's Circle.

Participants across all three programs reported feeling safer being themselves, more connected to others, and less alone. Parents saw real shifts in their kids' confidence and leadership at home. Women's Circle brought that same spirit across generations, pairing younger and older women and creating space for women at every life stage to be seen.

"For a teenage boy to have a group of peers being mentored by a group of trained men has been enormously helpful for our son," one parent wrote. "He's been shown an example of the kind of man he could be."

All three programs were offered tuition-free, removing cost as a barrier to belonging.

If you missed last Thursday's signing — VHCD and Vashon Island Fire & Rescue made it official: a three-year agreement to keep Vashon MIH on the island through 2028.

MIH has been out delivering care to residents since last year on interim funding; this locks in the long-term support. Thanks to everyone who came out to the Penny Farcy Training Building to celebrate with us.

Mark Your Calendar: A Long Awaited Milestone for Vashon Health Care

On Thursday, July 9th at 4:00 PM, Vashon Island Health Care District and Vashon Island Fire & Rescue will formally sign a multi-year agreement securing the future of Mobile Integrated Health through 2028. The signing will take place at the Penny Farcy Memorial Training Building. The public is welcome to attend.

Two public taxing districts — a health care district and a fire department — are committing, in writing, to fund and deliver in-home medical care to Vashon residents for the next three years. A community-driven rural health care model built by and for this community.

MIH has been operating on interim funding for nearly a year, bringing a physician assistant, nurses, and a social worker directly to residents' homes. This signing formalizes that commitment.

What: MIH Interlocal Agreement Signing
When: Thursday, July 9 · 4:00 PM

A quick appreciation post for the Vashon community.

In a time of funding cuts and uncertainty, this island — its residents, its nonprofits, its health care organizations, and the dedicated people who show up every day — has woven together something remarkable: a community that takes care of each other.

A look at what that looks like in 2026:
🏥 Two primary care clinics
📋️ School-based clinic
🚑 Mobile urgent care, 365 days a year
🩺 Community-based care — coming to you, Monday–Friday
💬 Expanded behavioral health services
👩‍⚕️ Clinical pharmacy services
❤️ Support for uninsured and low-income residents

Thank you to all who have helped make this progress possible. This is what community-built health care looks like. There is still a lot to do, and we are proud to be a part of it.

Behind every number is a young person or a family receiving support.

In Q1 2026, VYFS Intensive Case Management served 19 clients, welcomed 8 new youth, and provided dozens of meetings, crisis supports, and care coordination touchpoints to help youth stay safe, engaged, and connected.

We’re grateful for community partners like VYFS, who help families stay connected, supported, and thriving.
