🔥 Our wildland crew has spent the last two days in Division Sierra, working alongside the National Guard, Cal Fire, and other state agencies to support hotshot crews and defensive firing operations.
Lightning-sparked fires broke out in rough terrain yesterday, but aviation and hand crews contained them fast.

Cell service is pretty bad, but radios are keeping the team connected and everyone’s safe and in good spirits!

Bonus: our new rig is out there proving itself on its first real deployment. 🚒

School starts back up this month! Let’s show students what safe driving looks like.

Kids don’t always move predictably. They may step into a crosswalk while looking for friends, drop something near the road, or run back toward a bus without warning.

When you see a school bus or crosswalk, give the road your full attention:
• Yellow bus lights mean slow down and prepare to stop, not speed up to get past.
• Never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk; it may be shielding a person you can’t see.
• Make eye contact with children and crossing guards before moving.
• Leave extra space around buses: children can appear from either side.

A few extra seconds behind the wheel could protect a child for a lifetime. Let’s make every trip to and from school a safe one.

Our VIFR wildland firefighters headed out today in our new Type 6 brush rig to assist with wildland firefighting efforts on the Little Giant Fire.

The new 4WD brush rig is designed to get crews and equipment into remote, rugged country. It carries 1,000 feet of wildland hose, drip torches for backburn operations, hand tools, a chainsaw, EMS equipment, and, most importantly, a cooler full of water.

The rig can carry up to three wildland firefighters and will be staffed by VIFR personnel, with partner agencies helping when additional staffing is needed.

VIFR is part of the South Puget Strike Team, a regional team made up of fire departments from King, Pierce, Kitsap, and Mason counties. Strike teams typically deploy with 4–5 brush rigs, a water tender, and a Strike Team Leader, combining regional resources when fires require a larger response.

Today, our crews are putting that regional partnership and our new rig to work.

Effective immediately, the King County Fire Chief’s Association, King County Fire Marshals Association, and the King County Fire Marshal have implemented a Stage 2 Burn Ban covering all parts of King County.
This ban specifically prohibits all outdoor fires, including recreational campfires, cooking fires, and ceremonial fires - and it will remain in effect until further notice. The ban does not include propane or natural-gas-fired grills, fireplaces, fire tables, and other gas-fired appliances. These devices may continue to be used along with charcoal grills.

What you can do:
✅ Stay indoors with clean, filtered air when possible
✅ Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest and smokiest parts of the day
✅ Drink plenty of water
✅ Consider wearing a well-fitting N95 mask if you need to be outside for extended periods
😷 Free N95 masks are available in the VIFR lobby, stop by and pick some up. Others can be found at the Food Bank, Senior Center, Library and VCA.
- VCA is open to the public for additional smoke and heat relief noon to 5pm for the rest of this week. The library is open from 12-8pm for smoke/heat relief.

August 8th Safe Sitter Class Postponed
We're sorry to share that our August 8th class has been cancelled due to an unexpected scheduling conflict.

The good news: we've got another session coming up on September 12th, and current registrants will be given priority to move into that date.

If September 12th doesn't work for your family, please reach out to us directly and we'll help find another option. Registrants of the August 8 have also been emailed directly about the change.
