Sun’s out, bay doors open, and fresh air flowing while crews work on rigs.

It’s also the perfect time for a quick safety reminder:

Rags used with paint, stain, gas, or other flammable liquids can spontaneously combust if not handled properly. As these products dry, they release heat. If that heat gets trapped, it can start a fire.

Here’s how to stay safe:
• Never leave used rags in a pile
• Take them outside to dry, away from buildings
• Hang or lay them flat so heat can escape
• Once dry, store them in a tightly covered metal container
• Keep containers in a cool place, away from heat and sunlight
• Always store flammable liquids in original, sealed containers

A few extra minutes of prevention can save you from a serious fire. 🧯

We hope to see you at the Vashon Senior Center Memorial Day Block Party! After services at 11am on May 25 at the Vashon Cemetery, we will have the engine out back at the station for community members to come say hi and ask any questions between fun lawn games at Vashon Island Heritage Museum and food and music at the Senior Center!

On Wednesday evening, VIFR crews responded to a residential structure fire with mutual aid support from King County Fire District #2.

Crews worked quickly to contain the fire and prevent further spread.

Incidents like this are an important reminder of why training and mutual aid partnerships matter. Departments across our zone regularly train together so when additional resources are needed, crews can work safely and seamlessly alongside one another.

We are grateful for the support of our neighboring agencies and thankful to the community for giving responders space to work while crews were on scene.

Have you ever wondered why a fire engine sometimes shows up to a medical call? What firefighters do when they're not responding? Who decides dinner at the station? Or maybe you have a completely random question you've always wanted to ask.
We're starting a new series where VIFR staff answer your questions through short videos and posts.
Ask us anything: serious, curious, behind-the-scenes, or just for fun.
Examples:
• Why do multiple responders come to some calls?
• What happens after someone calls 911?
• What do crews do between calls?
• Coffee, tea, or energy drinks?
• Dishwasher pod in the designated holder or tossed straight in?

We might feature your question in an upcoming post or video 🔥

As we head into summer, our crews are out preparing for water season and making sure training and equipment are ready to go.

Before you head out on the water this summer, keep a few important safety reminders in mind:

🌊 Cold water can be dangerous, even on warm sunny days
🌊 Wear a properly fitted life jacket, not just keep one in the boat
🌊 Keep kids within arm’s reach near docks, beaches, and shorelines
🌊 Tell someone where you're going and when you plan to return

The water around Vashon is beautiful, but conditions can change quickly. We’re getting ready for summer and encouraging everyone to make safety part of the plan.

Today we’re celebrating the moms, stepmoms, grandmas, mother figures, and caregivers who give so much of themselves to their families and communities every single day.

A special shoutout to the moms of Vashon Island Fire & Rescue who balance long shifts, demanding work, and caring for others both on and off duty. Your strength, compassion, patience, and dedication do not go unnoticed.

Thank you for everything you do for this community and for the people who count on you most.

Happy Mother’s Day 💐
