Eden Reframed

Eden Reframed Eden Reframed is a community-based eco-art project on Vashon Island, WA Soil Remediation was directed by Evergreen State grad student, Shannon Clay.

Eden Reframed is a community-based eco-art project on Vashon Island, WA that opened to the public on September 3rd, 2011. This project was informed by permaculture design and combines a food forest with soil remediation and a community story hive. It was directed by artist/activist/educator/author Beverly Naidus, with the assistance of artist, Shahreyar Ataie. Permaculture designers who consulted

on the project were Deston Denniston, Emet Degermenci, and Marisha Auerbach. Funding was provided by SEEDS (socialecologyvashon.org), the Royalty Research Foundation of the University of Washington and The Harris and Frances Block Foundation. The love and care of the site was and continues to be provided by wonderful folks on Vashon Island. On the fall equinox, 2014, the care of the project was transferred to a team of activists promoting pollinator gardens and eliminating pesticides that kill bees on Vashon and elsewhere.

Eden Reframed is on her last legs. The Vashon Parks District has asked me if it can be removed so they make improvements on the park. To be honest, I have tried repeatedly to find new stakeholders for the project. There was significant interest, but no one followed through- hence, the project has suffered from serious neglect. The birds & bees have continued to benefit from its presence, but it’s time to say goodbye to this place of magic, what was once a place of liberation. An omphalos, as Chris Graham once called it. Now it is a literal symbol of impermanence. If you are on Vashon, you can stop by the story hive and leave a farewell message. I hope to do a goodbye ritual there before the end of September. 😢

One of the garden elves, Iris Spring, who is regenerating Eden Reframed told me that they have renamed it L'il Detroit. I'm so pleased with their reframing and renaming of the "reframed." https://www.yesmagazine.org/social-justice/2019/11/05/food-community-detroit-garden-agriculture?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR1lTd8eZBl7rHUb3aGw8IXcsm4OEgTlsXdi3dHqxGlvPCm5yjjVFUAg-GM =1628753954

Imagine my delight to discover that our Ecoart project is being revived and regenerated by some anonymous soul(s). I was astounded yesterday when we went their to picnic (my first visit since April) and found the fences secured, new plantings everywhere, and the lilac bush that had been planted for the late Ricky Green was alive and well. It certainly confirmed the vision I had written in my dedication to Ricky (posted on the fence) that this planting to bring his spirit to Vashon might bring good energy to the garden. Yes, there was graffiti on some of the signage, but the place felt lively with fruit bursting forth and so much lovely intention. I hope the guerilla gardener makes themselves known to us.

The last time I went to visit Eden Reframed in April 2021, the story hive had been vandalized. This was the first time this had happened in the 10 years of its existence. I was deeply disturbed, but recognized that the pent up feelings of the past year were being expressed in very unhelpful ways, but nevertheless being expressed. I'm not sure if the story hive has continued to be treated badly. Anyone on Vashon Island care to report? I'm really curious.

I want to bring more of this to Eden Reframed this summer. Hoping to get funding and stakeholders involved in making it happen.

Martin Crawford's forest garden is abundant, diverse, edible, and might be one answer to the future of food systems.

I spent about an hour at Eden Reframed last Thursday, weeding and pruning with the lovely Margot Boyer, and we discovered, the hard way, that the story hive has been commandeered by paper wasps. Margot got stung (fortunately through her clothes so it was less painful than it might have been). We need some good solutions for inviting those wasps to live elsewhere, otherwise I cannot refinish the hive during this dry season. Anyone who has suggestions, please send them. I was very happy to discover that the blueberry bushes are full of berries waiting to ripen and the new Italian prune plum trees are also carrying a nice bushel of fruit. Otherwise the place needs some serious clean up and I hope to do some of that this August, once my studio in Seattle is packed up and moved into storage.
