Sunday afternoon, April 28, 1974. Prayer, pride, and a packed open house.
Vass Volunteer Fire Department dedicated a 40 × 75-foot addition to the old station. Interior was painted snowy white with a green floor. Chief D. Hugh McLean welcomed everyone with a line that still fits: “This is your building, for you made it possible.”
Most of the cost came from three years of Fireman’s Jubilees (first Saturday in November) plus gifts from the firemen and their neighbors. County Fire Marshal Joe W. Adams told the crowd that good equipment and good community support make a good department — and that Vass had both.
Three local pastors led the service: Rev. Chester D. Brown (Methodist), Rev. Joe Reynolds (Presbyterian), and Rev. Jesse Mansfield (Baptist). Firemen pledged to keep serving. Townspeople pledged to keep supporting them.
When the speeches ended, the Ladies' Auxiliary poured punch and the firemen walked folks through the new bays — room for all three trucks, a meeting hall, cabinets, restrooms, and showers.
Many of the names in this Pilot photo are still familiar around Vass. The building has changed. The mission has not.
