Ladies and Gents, our Boss Lady, Karen Green, retires today.

Karen began her career as a police officer in Massachusetts. After moving to Maine, she worked as a specialist in our State Bureau of Identification, before becoming a cornerstone of our staff here at MCJA. For years, Karen has kept our front office running like a well-oiled machine. She'll be deeply missed in her administrative role here; fortunately, she doesn't live far, so we expect frequent visits.

Some of our staff are camera-shy; one of our training coordinators, (who knows he has a face built for radio) grabbed a selfie with The Boss Lady.

Congratulations on a well-earned retirement, Karen!

Some of Maine's top impaired driving enforcers are in Anaheim, at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Impaired Driving and Traffic Safety conference. There, they're learning of new studies and evolving best practices to remove alcohol and drug impaired drivers from our roadways.

Maine's group included Chief Eduardo Benjamin of the Holden Maine Police Department, Maine State Police Specialist Dalton Favreau, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Warden Nick Johnson, Oxford County Sheriff's Office Detective Dennis Lowe, Gorham Police Department Sergeant Ted Hatch & MCJA Impaired Driving Enforcement Training Coordinator Don Finnegan.

Several of Maine's group even got to chat with one of the founders of the Drug Evaluation & Classification Program, LAPD retired Sergeant Dick Studdard.

They'll bring back what they've learned and keep the rest of Maine's law enforcement informed, thanks to our "partners in crime" at Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.

Applications are open for a select number of seats in Maine's next Drug Recognition Expert school, classroom scheduled for December, 2026.

When officers make an arrest for operating under the influence, and a breath test indicates it's not just alcohol causing impairment, Maine's DREs are called in to evaluate the person. DREs can identify a category of drug(s) that the person is impaired by, and also identify many medical conditions that sometimes initially look like drug impairment.

This course isn't easy; in fact, it's probably the most academically challenging course offered here. Internationally, around 1/3 of students don't achieve certification. This takes intense study, hard work and a strong passion for impaired driving enforcement.

The application process isn't easy, either. Students will need to submit a supplemental application, answering information about their experience and training in OUI enforcement, obtain letters of reference, and submit their two most recent OUI arrest reports.

The DRE advisory committee will choose a number of applicants to interview, and select students to attend the classroom portion of training. That list of selected students must then be approved by the Commissioner of the Maine Department of Public Safety - this is the only law enforcement training program in Maine which requires, by law, Commissioner approval just to get a seat in the class.

Here's the good news - The equipment and tuition is paid for, thanks to our continuing partnership and support from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.

DREs are integral to Maine's impaired driving enforcement efforts, and are often called upon for their expertise. They are truly making a difference, and making our communities more safe.

DRE Classroom: December 7 - 17, 2026
In-state cert training: December or January, 2027, Dates TBD
Out of state field certifications: January 11 - 15, 2027

Our impaired driving enforcement training coordinator and well over 100 of Maine's law enforcement officers are in Portland for the Maine Impaired Driving Summit. This advanced training is sponsored by Maine Bureau of Highway Safety & AAA Northern New England.

We're heading Downeast! July 28th and 29th, we'll have several Drug Recognition Expert Instructors at Indian Township Tribal Government Building, training officers to recognize signs of drug impairment in drivers, using the knowledge and skills from NHTSA's Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement course.

The course is hosted by Indian Township Department of Public Safety and sponsored by Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.

Officers wishing to attend must be Maine full-time certified law enforcement officers, who have been issued an MCJA SFST proficiency certificate.
