🚒 Run #123 – Single Vehicle Accident on Sohn Road

Vassar Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle accident in the 6000 block of Sohn Road.

Due to the curves in this section of roadway and for the safety of emergency personnel operating at the scene, Sohn Road was temporarily closed to traffic while crews worked.

Vassar Fire Department assisted, the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office, Vassar Police Department Michigan State Police, MMR Ambulance Service, and Ten Point Towing.

Please remember to reduce your speed and use caution when traveling on rural roadways, especially in areas with sharp curves and limited visibility.

Run 121

Shortly after this evening’s severe thunderstorms, the Vassar Fire Department was dispatched to assist two individuals who were tubing on the Cass River.

As darkness fell and weather conditions worsened, the tubers became disoriented and were unable to determine their location. Tuscola County Central Dispatch was able to obtain GPS coordinates from the callers’ cell phone, providing firefighters with a search area along the river.

Using that information, firefighters located the individuals and assisted them safely from the river. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

This incident serves as an important reminder that rivers and waterways can quickly become dangerous during severe weather. Lightning, strong winds, darkness, and unfamiliar surroundings can quickly create an emergency situation.

Before heading out on the water, always check the weather forecast, carry a charged cell phone, and have a plan for exiting the river if conditions begin to change.

We are thankful for a safe outcome and proud of the efforts of our firefighters who responded during challenging weather conditions.

This evening, our area experienced severe thunderstorms, and a Tornado Warning was issued for the northern portion of the county.

During the warning, fire department personnel observed a visible funnel cloud west of town. While the funnel cloud appeared intermittently and no confirmed tornado touchdown was reported, the presence of a funnel cloud and the ongoing warning created enough concern that we activated the municipal tornado siren out of an abundance of caution.

Our primary responsibility is the safety of our residents. When weather conditions present a credible threat, we would rather provide an early warning and have residents take shelter unnecessarily than delay notification during a potentially dangerous situation.

We encourage all residents to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and to take Tornado Warnings seriously whenever they are issued.

🚒 Welcome Home, Heavy Rescue! 🚒

Today we proudly take delivery of our brand new Heavy Rescue truck.

This vehicle represents a significant investment in the safety of our community, and we sincerely thank the residents of the City of Vassar, Vassar Township, Juniata Township, and Tuscola Township for your continued trust and support.

Due to the volume of motor vehicle accidents we respond to each year, Vassar has always invested in a heavier rescue platform to ensure we are prepared. This new Heavy Rescue carries the majority of our on-scene manpower, our Jaws of Life, and specialized tools needed for nearly every incident we face—from serious traffic accidents to hazardous material responses and structure fires.

This truck is designed to serve for many years to come, improving safety for residents and firefighters alike.
