A little late, but one of the highlights of my 4th of July was stopping by the Ice Cream Social at the Vassar Historical Society. After enjoying some ice cream, I spent some time looking through the old records and found my great-grandmother, Honorata/Henrietta (Jawor) Datz, listed in the 1957 tax rolls for our family farm which dates back to 1919. What a special reminder of the deep roots my family has in this wonderful community.

Great weekend of campaigning! I enjoyed checking out the cars at the Caro Chamber of Commerce Cars and Crafts event. I then attended an ABATE District 7 meeting at the invitation of Butch Brown.

Enjoyed helping out at the concession stand for Tuscola Youth Softball and had a great time supporting a great organization. The strong community support for our young athletes is inspiring and makes a real difference.

Memorial Day is viewed as the unofficial start of summer in the United States. When my parents were kids, it was often called "Decoration Day," for the practice of decorating the graves of war dead with flowers and small American flags. By any name, Memorial Day is a time for remembering and honoring the soldiers, sailors, and marines who not only served their nation in war, but in Lincoln's words, "gave their lives that that nation might live."

I am proud of the military veterans in my family. My father served in the Vietnam era, my grandfathers in World War II, and at least one great-grandfather on the Western Front in World War I. They are gone now, and it is always fitting to remember them and honor their service. But they survived that service. They came home to Michigan, raised families, worked for decades in the auto industry, in some cases founded small businesses, and eventually retired. They lived to bounce grandchildren on their knees. They enjoyed peaceful, productive lives.

Memorial Day is for remembering those whose sacrifice made such lives possible.
