Summer is off and running with activities and hopefully some time to relax and enjoy your time off. Try to make the library one of your priorities for you and your children. We have a lot to offer!
The Oldham County Library, along with almost every county in the Panhandle, is a member of the Harrington Consortium in Amarillo. This provides an opportunity for you to enjoy and take advantage of resources available to members. Some of these resources include the Cloud Library which makes available eBooks and eAudio books that you can access on your computer, phone or Kindle. Britannica is another program which includes an adult general reference collection and a child-friendly collection. Just choose the age-appropriate level and you will find it easy to conduct research, complete assignments and work on special projects. Elementary students have access to interactive games, articles, videos, multimedia, maps and much more.
Another program is the TumbleBooks subscription which brings story books to life. This is an opportunity to access favorite books or discover new ones. Older readers will enjoy Tumble Readables, a mix of story, chapter, and classic books.
The Global Road Warrior helps you understand other countries and cultures, A to Z the USA is a resource for US state and territory information, Educate Station is for Pre-K through 5th Grade learning plans and activities.
There are also classes that teach computer basics, computer lessons for Seniors, how to use Excel, careers in cybersecurity, Texas DPS teen and adult driver's course, a practice driving test, a motorcycle permit practice test and a CDL permit practice test.
Come by the library to learn more about these opportunities, use our computers, take advantage of our copying and fax services or just check out a book!
Hope to see you soon!

Every year I have to submit an annual report to the Texas Public Library System which enables us to be eligible for a variety of funding opportunities, database programs and many other opportunities available through the state. As I was compiling this information for them I thought it might be interesting to pass along some of our statistics. Our library is part of the Harrington Consortium which serves libraries in the Panhandle. If you have a library card from Vega you should be able to use it at other libraries in the Panhandle including Amarillo. A Cloud Library program is available for patrons to check out books online. There are over 119,000 books available on this website. I can help you download the APP and set up an account if you would like to take advantage of this.
This past year we recorded 2,488 visits to our library. This was counting local patrons, field trips from our school, kids who come to our summer reading program held in July, our monthly book club meeting and Christmas on the Square. We also participate in the Trick or Trunk event held on the square before Halloween. We have activities and goodies to hand out during many of these events. Visitors will drop in on their way down Rt. 66 to take a break or ask for information. People come in to check out books, use our computers and printers and sometimes just to browse and enjoy our unique building, which by the way is almost 100 years old.
Last year we checked out 875 books to children and 525 to adults. I think we have a pretty good selection of all kinds of reading material for all ages. I am always ordering new books and taking out old and damaged ones so our collection stays fairly up to date. If there is a particular book you want and we don't have, I will order it for you!
Have a great week, enjoy the warmer, hopefully calmer, weather and drop in. We'd love to see you.

❄️🎄 Christmas on the Square Update! 🎄❄️
Hey Oldham County! ❤️
With the extremely cold weather rolling in, we’ve made the tough decision to reschedule Christmas on the Square. Your safety, and the safety of our vendors, and volunteers—comes first.

🎄 We’ll now be celebrating on December 6th.
Bundle up when the time comes and get ready for a magical day together. Thank you for sticking with us!

We appreciate your understanding as we work to make sure our event is safe, warm, and wonderful for all.

Cold weather has definitely set in! I will surely miss the beautiful, mild days of fall. I was really hoping the weather would hold for our Christmas on the Square last weekend, but I guess Mother Nature had other plans. I'm sure you've heard it's been rescheduled for this next Saturday, December 6th from 12-4:00 p.m. It's a really busy weekend, but maybe you can squeeze in a few minutes to come down and enjoy all the events the Chamber has been working so hard to organize. There will be some really fun activities, including writing a letter to Santa here at the library. I have a mailbox and everything necessary to make sure your letter will get there on time. I think the FBC is going to be set up at the library too, so you can decorate an ornament for your tree. The businesses along the square will be open as well as vendors from out of town selling an assortment of goods and food. We are still receiving new books that are guaranteed to meet every reading need. If you can't find a book here, I can help you access the Harrington website to check out audiobooks and online books that can be downloaded onto your phone, I-pad or Kindle. Our book club still meets once a month. Let me know if you would be interested and I can set you up to join our Group Me group for notifications and information. We would love to have you join us! Please stop at any time. We are open 12-6:00 p.m. MWF and Saturday 9-12:00. Hope to see you this weekend at Christmas on the Square!!
