We are so proud to celebrate our most recent intern, Sabrina Gonzales, who joined us through our collaboration with Future Focused Education!
During her time at Mesa Prieta, Sabrina learned photographic documentation, recorded multiple petroglyph boulders using Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry to produce 3D models, and prepared those models for 3D printing. She also got a firsthand look at the day-to-day life of a small nonprofit, from fieldwork to the behind-the-scenes that keeps a project like this running.
The prints themselves will now serve as teaching tools here at the project and will be shared with our partners at the NM Office of Archaeological Studies, where they will help facilitate conversations about rock imagery with visually impaired audiences. That is meaningful and lasting work!
Sabrina shared these words at the start of her internship:
"History and archaeology have always been among my favorite subjects, thanks to my parents. My dad was Native American and shared everything he could about his culture and traditions. What fascinates me most is knowing that the descendants of the people who created them are still here, still carrying forward similar traditions and practices. That continuity feels like something worth protecting."
