The demolition of Sarasota Square Mall has begun.

Sarasota Square Mall in Sarasota, Florida opened on September 28, 1977. The mall was developed by Arlen Realty and Development Corporation.
Construction and development
The mall was originally zoned as a commercial shopping center
The mall's original anchor stores were JCPenney, Maas Brothers, J. Byrons, and a six-screen movie theater
A new wing was added in 1989 with Parisian as the anchor store
A Costco store was added in 2012

Redevelopment
The mall is being redeveloped into a mixed-use town center
The redevelopment will include 1,200 apartments, 692,500 square feet of commercial and office space, and an event space
The redevelopment will also include an upgraded stormwater management system and utilities
The redevelopment will improve mobility with sidewalks and an 8-foot multi-use trail
The redevelopment will also include an on-site transit stop
