Parents โ€” it takes less than a minute to build a life-saving routine:
๐Ÿงธ Keep a stuffed animal in the front seat as a visual reminder
๐ŸŽ’ Leave an important item in the back seat so you have to check
๐Ÿ”‘ Keep your car locked at home so kids canโ€™t crawl inside and get trapped

The Saramana Chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution recently presented their prestigious Law Enforcement Commendation Medal to VPD Officer Erin Skaggs in recognition of her exceptional service to the community.

In 2021, Officer Skaggs was instrumental in initiating VPD's involvement in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. What began as our inaugural participation has, through her leadership and commitment, become an ongoing tradition. Since that time, she has continued to organize, promote, and strengthen partnership with Special Olympics, and enhanced the City's engagement.

In August of 2021, Officer Skaggs established a goal to implement a physical training regimen at the start of in-service training. Through her persistence and leadership, this initiative was successfully implemented department-wide in 2024, promoting officer wellness, readiness, and performance.

Officer Skaggs has also demonstrated a strong commitment to community outreach through her participation in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast program since 2023. Also, Officer Skaggs, partnered with K9 Palmer, has participated in many community outreach events, educating residents and establishing a rapport with numerous nonprofit organizations and community partners. These involvements reflect her dedication mentoring youth and fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and the community.

Officer Skaggs, you have consistently distinguished yourself through your leadership, initiative, and commitment to strengthen both our agency and those we serve. Congrats on this well-deserved award!

๐Ÿ–ค๐ŸพToday, we pause to remember and honor retired Venice Police Department K-9 Mako, who faithfully served the Venice community alongside Officer Kristen Kimson from February 2015 until his retirement in July 2021.

On May 16, 2026, Mako passed away surrounded by those who loved him most. He was more than a police K-9. He was a loyal partner, protector, and beloved member of the Venice Police Department family.

Throughout his years of service, Mako worked tirelessly beside his handler to help keep our community safe. Whether responding to calls, training, or supporting fellow officers, Mako approached every task with unwavering loyalty and heart.

Outside of the badge, Mako had a softer side too. He loved sweet treats from Culverโ€™s and visiting with detectives while on duty. Mako formed a bond with Officer Kimson that extended far beyond the job. ๐Ÿฆ

His pawprints left a lasting impact on this department and the community he served so faithfully. Thank you for your service, K-9 Mako. You were a very good boy, and you will never be forgotten. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿพ
