🚧 ROADWAY CONSTRUCTION NOTIFICATION – W. 3RD & S. WALNUT 🚧

Residents may notice that some streets remain in one phase of construction for a period of time before the asphalt overlay is placed. This is a normal part of the construction process. Work is completed in phases so the contractor can efficiently move crews and equipment through the project area.

👷 ROADWAY RECONSTRUCTION PHASES

🚜 Phase 1 – Roadway Base Preparation
The first crew performs 8-inch depth stabilization, adds cement slurry, and completes compaction of the roadway base. This strengthens and prepares the foundation before the final driving surface is installed.

🛣️ Phase 2 – Asphalt Overlay
Once enough roadway has been prepared to make the asphalt operation efficient, the asphalt crew and equipment will move in to place the 3-inch asphalt overlay.

⚠️ PLEASE USE CAUTION IN THE AREA
• Expect construction equipment and workers near the roadway.
• Temporary lane impacts and traffic delays may occur.
• Follow all traffic control signage and directions.
• Reduce speed and stay alert when traveling through the construction zone.

📍 Construction Areas:
W. 3rd Street between FM 157 & Walnut @ the Square, and S. Walnut on the west side of the Square.

📞 Questions? Contact Johnny Coker, Public Works Superintendent, at 972-366-3435 ext. 302.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as these important roadway improvements continue. 🦺

CITY OF VENUS PROVIDES UPDATE ON VENUS SQUARE STRUCTURAL CONCERNS VENUS, TEXAS — August 13, 2026

The City of Venus and Venus Fire Department are actively addressing structural concerns involving a portion of the commercial buildings along W. 2nd Street on the Venus Square. The concerns were initially identified by Venus Fire Department personnel, followed by a city assessment and an immediate decision to obtain an independent professional evaluation. A structural engineer with Bluebonnet Structural Engineering & Consulting, LLC conducted a site evaluation on August 12, 2026.
Based on that evaluation, the engineer determined that portions of the affected structure present an immediate structural concern and recommended temporary safety measures, including restricted access and temporary shoring. Importantly, the engineer also determined that the structure appears salvageable and did not recommend condemnation at this time. Following proper shoring and stabilization, portions of the property, including the currently occupied restaurant area, may be able to safely resume patron access.

Interim City Administrator James Hawthorne said, "Our responsibility is to act when we identify a potential threat to public safety, and that is exactly what we have done. We moved quickly to bring in a qualified structural engineer so that decisions could be based on professional evaluation rather than speculation. At the same time, we recognize how important the Square is to our business community, and we are committed to finding a path forward that protects people while minimizing unnecessary disruption to our businesses."

The City understands the significant impact that temporary restrictions may have on businesses, employees, property owners, and customers. The goal is not simply to close businesses or restrict access, but to identify and isolate areas of concern, protect the public, stabilize the affected structure, and return safe areas to normal operations as quickly as reasonably possible. There has been no reported structural collapse, and the actions being taken are precautionary and proactive measures intended to prevent an incident and protect lives. Residents and visitors are asked to respect all barricades, restricted areas, and directions from City personnel and emergency responders while this work continues. Life safety remains our highest priority, while protecting the vitality of Venus Square remains an important part of our response.
