On Thursday morning, a man walked into the Verden
Police Department bleeding from his mouth. He stated that he had been assaulted in his home by his live-in girlfriend, Verna Faye Pulido. Major Perry isolated the victim in the squad room to gather photographic evidence and get his statement. Chief Cox left the building and headed to the residence located on Oklahoma Avenue to investigate.

As Chief Cox approached the residence from the east on Oklahoma Avenue, he observed Mrs. Pulido walking towards him between 5th and 6th streets. She was arrested and given her Miranda Warning.

Mrs. Pulido stated that the fight was started after being called lazy. The victim stated that it was over the temperature set on the thermostat.

The victim stated that during the argument, a chair got knocked over. When he reached down to pick up the chair, Mrs. Pulido grabbed him by the mouth with her fingers inside of his mouth. The fingernail of her left middle finger ripped the flesh from the inside of his cheek. The fingernail also broke off of her finger. The victim did have a cut on the inside of his cheek that was bleeding badly.

Mrs. Pulido had no visibly recent wounds on her body with the exception of a broken fingernail that she admitted had, after being advised of her Miranda Rights, broke off inside of the victims mouth.

The victim was seen at the Grady County Memorial Hospital for his wound and Mrs. Pulido was booked into the Grady County Jail on the charge of Domestic Assault & Battery.

100 years ago today, Verden City Marshal Alexander Apgriffeth "Griff" Anderson was killed in the line of duty.

City Marshal “Griff” Anderson’s body was found in a Rock Island Railroad boxcar the morning of December 3, 1925. His gun and extra bullets were missing. He had been dragged 350 feet into the boxcar from in front of Bruce’s Garage in Verden. According to a doctor’s report he had been killed sometime during the night.

City Marshal “Griff” Anderson, 41, left behind his pregnant wife, Pearl, three daughters and a stepson and is buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma.

Five years later George W. Smith confessed to taking part in Anderson’s death and was sentenced to life in prison.

My best research shows that he was paroled a few years later.

Please remember Marshal Griff Anderson today, a century after his murder. The passing of time and those left behind should not reduce the importance of his sacrifice to our little town.

Regards,

Jason Cox
Chief of Police

Due to the pending lapse in food aid from the Federal Government, the Verden Police Department is accepting quality non-perishable food items and necessities as a stop-gap measure for our local folks who may need a little help.

Please drop by the Verden Town Hall at 101 S. Main Street and share if you can.

We will be reaching out to our local food pantries to assist us with distribution. If you can't get by during business hours, there will be a black plastic box with a blue lid on it outside the main entrance for safekeeping from the elements.

Thank you and God bless you,

Chief Cox
