Satchel McLaughlin, a 2023 graduate of PAHCC's Design and Illustration program, fondly remembers how the program set her on a clear path toward a career in art. "Getting to go to Design and Illustration every afternoon during my junior year was the best part of my day. It was a break from other classes, and I was motivated to invest time into something I truly enjoyed," she says. One of her standout memories was a printmaking unit where she explored different techniques like relief, silkscreen, and mono-printing. "The class critique was a real highlight, as I was blown away by the unique approaches my peers took to the medium," Satchel recalls.
The skills Satchel learned at PAHCC helped guide her decision to pursue studio art at Hamilton College. "It was the first time I saw art as a viable career path, and PAHCC helped solidify that for me," she says. The program's emphasis on creating professional portfolios and receiving feedback from art school admissions teams further fueled her ambition. At Hamilton, Satchel's expertise in Adobe Illustrator led her to work as a digital media tutor and later as a digital media intern.
After college, Satchel took a gap year, where she worked in various creative roles, including a summer internship at the VIA Agency in Portland, Maine, and assisting a ceramicist with her website. She is now attending Pratt Institute in New York City to earn a degree in Graphic Design. To see more of her work, check out SatchelRust.com.
