Risking it all beneath the Basin.

This Labor Day, we’re honoring countless miners who braved the dangers of nineteenth-century mines in the Uinta Basin to extract Uintaite—better known as Gilsonite.

Over 150 years after its discovery in the 1860s, this rare hydrocarbon that is unique to our region has found its way into a huge variety of things, from paints and varnishes to auto tires and barrel linings. But it was the grit, sweat, and sacrifice of local miners that put it on the map and built our rural community into what it is today.
