unity Services applicants and we do our best to assist them in earning their hours, but we have to schedule appointments several weeks in advance. We appreciate your patience as we try to fit you into our busy schedule. You must have a previously scheduled appointment in order to do Community Service in the Museum of Uintah County. Real World Ready has started up again and will take place on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30! Real World Ready is designed for ages 12 to 18 and is hosted by TriCounty Health Department and USU Extension - Uintah County here at the Museum of Uintah County! While we have Voices and Votes: Democracy in America we are hosting a couple of special events during Real World Ready. The first one is coming up on September 15th, where teens are invited to a special guided tour of the Smithsonian exhibition, where we’ll learn about the American experiment through discussion and games!

Our exhibit Use Your Voice accompanies the exhibit Voices and Votes: Democracy in America to share a few ways that locals have used their voices. One local story that Use Your Voice shares is of a protest that occurred at Vernal Junior High in 1972.

The dress code said that boys could not have long hair and that girls could not wear short dresses. Six boys and two girls were sent home for violating the dress code, so the next day students protested.

Come learn more about this protest that led to a week long suspension for many junior high students in 1972.

We have a lot of fun events coming up next month related to Voices and Votes: Democracy in America! Learn more at themuc.org/voices-and-votes

September 3rd MUC Connect starts up again from 6 pm to 7 pm. Join us at the Uintah County Library for a special panel featuring young community leaders who will compare their elected roles, as well as share their wins and struggles. Moderated by Uintah County Commissioner Sonja Norton.

September 15th we will have Real World Ready from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Museum of Uintah County. Teens are invited to special guided tours of the Smithsonian exhibition, where we’ll learn about the American experiment through discussion and games.

Septemebr 17th we will have MUC Connect from 6 pm to 7 pm at the Museum of Uintah County. Join us for Professor Charlotte Terry's presentation “Using our Voices: Democratic Participation in the Uinta Basin” to learn how Basinites have participated in the democratic process, and how these efforts connect to the push and pull of American democracy.

September 29th we will have Crafting Change with USU Extension from 6 pm to 7 pm. Join us for monthly craft workshops to learn new skills and improve well-being. Sessions include historic crafts paired with presentations about the power of using your voice when it matters most.

Lucy Hayes was born on this day in 1831. She served as first lady from 1877 to 1881 as the wife of 19th president, Rutherford B. Hayes. Lucy received the nickname "Mother Lucy" from the men of the 23rd Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. She administered aid to the wounded, cheered up the homesick, and comforted the dying. Another nickname people referred to her as was "Lemonade Lucy" because she refused to serve alcohol during her time in the White House.

Her doll in our First Ladies of the White House Doll Collection was costumed by Sandra Horrocks Rasmussen and given by Isobel Dillman Batty in honor of Permelia Bigelow Batty.
