Search & Rescue Training | Aug 14-17

Visitors to the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata may encounter temporary route closures Aug. 14-17 for specialized Search and Rescue Training.

Home to the longest via ferrata in North America, Ashley Gorge offers a unique environment for technical training.

Our SAR personnel don't just serve Uintah County. They take their skills across Utah into bordering states and beyond when specialized rescue experience is needed.
Training here strengthens their ability to respond safely and effectively, benefiting our community, region and communities across the country,

We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation with the temporary closures.

Please respect all posted closures and give training teams room to work safely.

Planning to tackle the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata? Buckle up! 🧗

No, literally. Buckle up.

A via ferrata is an amazing adventure — but the right gear is what keeps it safe AND fun. Before you head out, make sure you have the following AND that it is certified for via ferrata use.

⛑️ Helmet — Protects your head from falling rock and unexpected slips. Look for one that's lightweight, comfortable, and adjustable. Pro tip: a helmet that isn't strapped on securely isn't doing its job!

🪢 Climbing harness — Your lifeline on the iron rungs. Choose one that fits properly and lets you move freely while keeping you secure.

🔗 Via ferrata lanyard — This specialized lanyard has two carabiners and built-in shock absorbers that keep you attached to the safety cable at all times. Check it for wear before every climb!

🧤 Gloves — Steel cables and iron rungs are tough on hands. Gloves protect against blisters, sharp cable strands, and hot metal on sunny days.

🥾 Sturdy shoes or boots — Skip the sandals and slick-soled sneakers! You'll want closed-toe footwear with good grip for the rungs and rock.

The right gear protects you from falls and hazards while letting you move comfortably across the rock. Gear up, clip in, and enjoy the view! 🏔️

🌄🧗‍♀️ Adventure is waiting at the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata — and making sure everyone is ready for the climb helps keep it fun for the whole family!
Before your young adventurer clips in, make sure they meet the route safety requirements:

📏Minimum reach: 62 inches from the ground
⚖️Minimum weight: 90 pounds

Climbers under 90 pounds must be accompanied by a professional guide and use a supplemental belay system on sections with significant vertical climbing.

These requirements help ensure the certified safety equipment functions properly and that climbers can safely reach the next hold along the route.

There will be an open house to learn about wildland urban interface (WUI) areas, mapping, and wildfire preparedness. The open house will be held on Tuesday January 27, 2026 from 6-8pm in the Vernal City Community Room, located at 374 E Main St Vernal, Utah 84078.
