Attention all quilters, seamstresses, and designers—we need you!

On February 28, several of us from the Vernon Township Historical Society are going to meet with other historical societies around the county to begin designing and working on a 250th anniversary quilt.

Even if you cannot do quilting or sewing but have a good eye for design, help us design the square Vernon will contribute to this county quilt we will create for the 250th anniversary.

We are meeting at 10 a.m. on February 28 at the Ogdensburg Fire House near the ball fields.

If you are interested in participating in this historic event, PM ,call or email at [email protected]. You can ride there on your own or ride with us.

This is a sample of the type of quilt we will create, but we will design our own. Each participating municipality will select a historic site from their town to represent a square. We have not finalized what our square will contain but we are leaning on our one-room schoolhouse at Price's Switch Road.

Funding for the historical society has been made available in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission through the County Historical Partnership Program, as administered by the Sussex County Art and Heritage Council.

Here is some historical snowfalls in Vernon , Sussex County and NJ!

52 inches of snow on the ground at Canistear Reservoir (Vernon Township) on Feb 5, 1961 — the highest ever snow depth recorded in the state.

February 5,1978 about 32 inches of snow fell and drifts reached up to 15 feet due to hurricane force winds.

The 1995–96 season was re-evaluated and confirmed as New Jersey’s snowiest snow season on record with 122.0 inches at High Point Park (Sussex County). Vernon area likely saw very high totals too in that season.

In Sussex County, the heaviest 24-hour snowfall on record was 30 inches on January 26, 1905 one of the most extreme snow events ever recorded in the area

Great Blizzard of 1888, one of the most destructive snowstorms on record in the United States. The blizzard dumped 20 to 40 inches of snow across New Jersey.

December 26–27, 1947 – Great Blizzard of 1947
A massive snowstorm during the 1947 Christmas week dumped up to 29.7 inches in a 24-hour span in parts of New Jersey, now recognized as the state’s highest one-day snowfall in NJ records.

Another big one-day (January 23,2016) snowfall 30 inches was recorded in NJ making it one of the top single-day totals in New Jersey history.

Please feel free to add any that have been left out that pertain to our area.
