Wilbarger County Emergency Management is a coordinated effort of Wilbarger County and the City of Vernon. Under the direction of the County Judge and the Mayor of the City of Vernon, the Office of Emergency Management trains and prepares for potential emergency situations that could arise within the boundaries of its service area, and is ready to respond should such an event / events occur. Vernon, Harrold and several other local fire departments are working a large grass fire in the area of 283 at the Texas/Oklahoma state line. Please use caution in this area.

Special Weather Statement issued August 27 at 8:26AM CDT by NWS Norman OK

At 825 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from near Warren to near Goodlett. Movement was
southeast at 20 mph. Outflow ahead of storms will bring gusty winds
with gusts to 40 mph before rain arrives.

HAZARD...Wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
unsecured objects.

Locations impacted include...
Northwestern Lawton, Altus, Vernon, Frederick, Mangum, Quanah,
Hollis, Crowell, Cache, Granite, Snyder, Tipton, Blair, Chillicothe,
Olustee, Eldorado, Lone Wolf, Mountain Park, Indiahoma, and Davidson.

If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.

The City of Vernon has currently been in a burn ban and have not been writing burn permits.
The Wilbarger County commission recently placed the county in a County wide burn ban.
We encourage all the citizens of Wilbarger County to be cautious of the dangers caused by fires.
Please call 911 as soon as any fire is spotted.

⚠️ WEEKLY WEATHER UPDATE — WILBARGER COUNTY ⚠️

Wilbarger County is facing dangerous heat and elevated wildfire danger this week.

🌡️ An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect today from noon until 8 p.m. Temperatures may reach 113°F, with dangerous heat continuing Tuesday. Highs will remain near or above 100°F through the weekend. National Weather Service forecast

🔥 Hot, dry and breezy conditions will create a significant risk for fast-moving grass fires. Please:

Avoid outdoor burning and welding.
Do not park vehicles on dry grass.
Secure trailer chains so they cannot drag and spark.
Properly dispose of ci******es.
Report smoke or fire immediately.

💧 Limit strenuous outdoor activity, drink plenty of water and check on children, older adults, outdoor workers and pets. Never leave anyone in a parked vehicle.

Storm chances return Wednesday and Thursday, but lightning and gusty winds may create additional hazards. Stay weather-aware and monitor official updates throughout the week.

a line extending from 6 miles northwest of Lockett to 11 miles south
of Thalia to 8 miles southwest of Truscott. Movement was southeast at
30 mph.

HAZARD...Wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
unsecured objects.

Locations impacted include...
Vernon, Crowell, Benjamin, Red Springs, Thalia, Gilliland, Margaret,
Lockett, Vera, Truscott, Rhineland, Lake Kemp, and Rayland.

Strong thunderstorms will impact portions of southern Foard Knox southwestern Wilbarger northwestern Baylor and southeastern Hardeman Counties through 700 PM CDT

1447- Fire is now out. Harrold VFD will continue to monitor the scene.

1354- UPDATE- Fire crews on scene advised they have the fire under control

The fire department is currently working a grass fire in the area of the Harrold truck stop.
Please stay clear of the area. We will update with a drop off location for water, and hydration supplies shortly if they are needed.
