Vernon Business Spotlight and ! ✨The PABCO Paper plant has been part of Vernon’s industrial history for more than a century. Built in 1912, the facility was originally known as Southern Board and Paper Mills. In the 1920s, it became a division of Fibreboard Products, and in 1977, it was sold to a local packaging company.

In 1984, Pacific Coast Building Products purchased the mill, which began operating as PABCO Paper. Today, PABCO Paper produces products for the building and packaging industries, using pre- and post-consumer recycled materials to create wallboard lining and specialty papers.

In May, the California Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony was held at the State Capitol in Sacramento to honor peace officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during the preceding year. The ceremony also pays tribute to the more than 1,600 officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice since California became a state and recognizes the families they left behind. ❤️🤍💙

This year, members of the Vernon Police Department attended and participated in the ceremony to honor the three officers our department has lost, as well as all law enforcement heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

Team Vernon PD proudly joined more than 300 other police agencies across Southern California for the 2026 Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run, helping raise funds that provide equipment, uniforms, training, education, and health programs for athletes with intellectual disabilities and their communities.

Our officers ran a 2.3-mile stretch through the City, finishing at the steps of Vernon City Hall — thank you to everyone who supports these inspiring athletes and this meaningful cause!

Join us in congratulating two outstanding Vernon team members on their well-deserved promotions! 🎉 Veronica Petrosyan is our new Director of Health and Environmental Control, and Lilia Hernandez is our new Deputy City Administrator.

Veronica brings more than 21 years of experience in environmental health, including over seven years serving the City of Vernon Health and Environmental Control Department. Prior to Vernon, she held a variety of roles with the Los Angeles County Department of Health. Her expertise makes her a true asset in our Vernon community.

Lilia has approximately 12 years of experience with the City of Vernon City Administration Department, serving in a range of professional and management positions from Executive Assistant to the City Administrator to Assistant to the City Administrator. Her leadership and dedication have made a lasting impact on our organization.

Vernon Public Utilities is proud to share that it has been recognized by the American Public Power Association (APPA), earning the 2025 Certificate of Excellence in Reliability. ⚡

Each year, APPA evaluates electric reliability data from member utilities nationwide. Based on this comparison, VPU ranked in the top quartile of utilities for System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), a key measure that considers outage duration, restoration time, and outage frequency.

This marks the second consecutive year VPU has received this honor, reflecting our continued commitment to delivering reliable service and quick power restoration to the Vernon community.

Our May 5th City Council meeting was a memorable one - a celebration of leadership, service, and new beginnings.

Please join us in thanking outgoing Mayor Leticia Lopez for her dedication and service to the Vernon community over the past 10 years. During the meeting, Mayor Lopez was recognized for her many accomplishments by representatives from the offices of Congressman Robert Garcia, Assemblymember Mark Gonzalez, and LA Supervisor Janice Hahn. Appreciation was also expressed by the Vernon Chamber of Commerce, and the City presented Mayor Lopez with a proclamation and commemorative “Leticia Lopez Way” street sign in her honor.

The departure of Mayor Lopez is bittersweet, as we are incredibly excited to officially welcome newly sworn-in Council Member Monica Rodriguez. A long time City resident and employee of a Vernon business, Council Member Rodriguez will be instrumental in shaping Vernon's path forward. Be sure to say hello at an upcoming City Council meeting!
