🐾 Welcome to the Vernon Police Department, Police K-9 Max! 🚔

The Vernon Police Department welcomed a new four-legged member to the team as part of the effort to reinstate the department’s K-9 Program. Before officially serving the City of Vernon, K-9 Officer Escobedo and Max are attending a six-week Basic K-9 Handler’s Course at Adlerhorst International Training Facility. The program will help build the skills and teamwork needed to become a successful K-9 team.

We’re excited to follow Max and Officer Escobedo’s progress and look forward to the important role they will play in supporting the Vernon community. 🐶💙

Congratulations to our 2026 Vernon CommUNITY Fund (VCF) scholarship grant recipients! A total of $150,000 in funds were awarded to 31 high school seniors attending school or living in the Vernon area - Individual scholarship amounts ranged from $1,500-$8,000.💰 Here are a few fun facts about the group of students that received awards this year:

⭐ Many are first generation college students
⭐ They live in Maywood, Huntington Park, Bell, Boyle Heights, Cudahy, East LA, South Gate, Bell Gardens, and Commerce
⭐ They will be attending schools like Dartmouth College, UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal State LA, Harvey Mudd College, Columbia University, UC Santa Cruz, Pepperdine, USC, NYU, Cal State Fullerton, UC San Diego, Penn State, and UC Berkeley!
⭐ They will be pursuing careers in fields like social work, nursing, education, engineering, business, marketing, finance, film, computer science, psychology, and law
⭐ A couple of these incredible students achieved GPAs over 5.0!
⭐ One student shared that her VCF award is extra special since both her parents have worked in the City of Vernon for about 18 years

The students were invited to Vernon's City Council meeting on August 4th to receive their grant awards and be recognized for their outstanding academic performance, personal achievement, community involvement, and leadership.👏👏👏

We appreciate the opportunity to help support these amazing young people and wish them much success in their college careers and beyond!

The VCF Scholarship Program will be offered in 2027 as well so keep a lookout for upcoming announcements with all the details.

Please note the following traffic modifications in the City of Vernon and use alternate routes when possible to avoid congestion that may develop in these areas.

🚧 Caltrans 710 Restoration Project
From August 10th–25th, Caltrans will perform nighttime work on the 710 Bridge. On-ramps at Atlantic Blvd and Bandini Blvd will be closed from 8:00pm-3:30am, Monday–Friday. Detours will be in place. Street traffic will remain open in both directions on Atlantic and Bandini.

🚧 Lane Closures - Vernon Ave/Soto St
As of August 12, lane closures are in effect for off-site improvements at 3094 E Vernon Ave (a new development on the southeast corner). Northbound Soto St and eastbound Vernon Ave will be reduced to one lane. Opposing traffic will remain unaffected. These traffic modifications will remain in place for approximately 30 days.
