Happy National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week!

Shoutout to the only people who can get us out of bed faster than our alarm clocks—our dispatchers. Thanks for getting us where we need to go, keeping us in line, and somehow understanding us on the radio.

We appreciate everything you do!

Last Monday, Vernon Fire Department members took part in a rare and valuable hands-on training alongside Ramsey Fire Department, utilizing two unoccupied homes scheduled for demolition.

Firefighters sharpened their skills in primary search and rescue under heavy smoke conditions, basement fire tactics, and second-story fire advancements—realistic training that helps us better serve and protect our community.

A big thank you to Ramsey Fire Department for making this opportunity possible!

❄️ Stay Cold-Weather Ready, Vernon! ❄️
The forecast is calling for a major temperature drop this weekend, and the Vernon Fire Department wants to ensure our community stays safe and warm.

🏠 Home Safety Tips:
Chimney Safety: If you’re lighting the fireplace, ensure your chimney was inspected and cleaned this season. Only burn seasoned wood, and always use a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room.

Space Heaters: Keep them at least 3 feet away from anything flammable (curtains, rugs, bedding). Always plug them directly into the wall—never use an extension cord.

Generators: If you lose power, keep generators outside and at least 20 feet away from windows and doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Check Your Alarms: Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries or are not expired and are working properly.

❤️ Be a Good Neighbor:
Cold weather can be especially tough on seniors and those living alone. Take a moment this weekend to:

Check-in: Give a quick call or a knock on the door to see if they have adequate heat.

Offer Help: Assist with clearing paths or checking their thermostat.

Stay warm, stay safe, and let’s look out for each other, Vernon!

Tonight our members spent hours digging out hydrants in Vernon. PLEASE remember if there is a hydrant on your property you are required to dig it out. if we needed to use them for a fire they would have been useless. We can only do so much and rely on the members of our community to help us out.

❄️ Severe Snowstorm Safety Reminder ❄️

As a major snowstorm is predicted to impact our area, please take extra precautions to keep your home and family safe:

🔥 Chimney & Heating Safety
• Heavy snow and ice can block or damage chimneys and vents
• Clear snow away from chimney openings and exterior vents, especially pellet stove vents.
• If you notice smoke backing up, strange odors, or visible damage, do not use your fireplace or wood stove

⚡ Generator Safety During Power Outages
• Use generators OUTDOORS ONLY — never inside homes, garages, or near doors/windows
• Keep generators at least 20 feet from structures
• Make sure carbon monoxide alarms are working on every level of your home
• Allow generators to cool before refueling to prevent fires

🚒 Winter Storm Fire Safety Tips
• Never use grills, propane heaters, or ovens to heat your home
• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything combustible
• Stay clear of downed power lines — report them by calling 911

Stay warm, stay safe, and look out for your neighbors.
