346pm Fire Department has confirmed the fire is out. As with all grass fires, hot spots may still arise. Please call 911 if you see flames.

Vernon FD, Harrold VFD and Tillman are working a grass fire on Highway 70 N near the Red River Bridge. Please use caution in this area and stay clear of fire units while they are working.

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes here at City Hall? Here’s just a small glimpse into a typical day for our City Secretary, Marsha Jo Stone, better known around here as Mama Jo!

We don’t call her Mama Jo for nothing! She is our HR queen, employee advocate, problem-solver, go-to person and the one who somehow always seems to have an answer when we need one. Whether she’s helping an employee, answering questions, solving problems or simply taking care of our City family, she goes above and beyond every single day.

And judging by the line outside her office, we aren’t the only ones who know just how valuable she is!

We truly could not do what we do without her. Thank you, Mama Jo, for taking care of our City family, keeping us all on track and always being there when we need you!

The City of Vernon has currently been in a burn ban and have not been writing burn permits.
The Wilbarger County commission recently placed the county in a County wide burn ban.
We encourage all the citizens of Wilbarger County to be cautious of the dangers caused by fires.
Please call 911 as soon as any fire is spotted.

This week, we are proud to spotlight Randall Lewis of Vernon Fire/EMS, who joined the department in February 2026.

Randall began his fire service career as a volunteer firefighter in 2001 before serving as a firefighter/EMT at Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada and later at Altus Air Force Base. He retired as a Captain from the Department of Defense in December 2024.

Randall brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Vernon Fire/EMS team, and we are grateful to have him serving our community.
