City of Vero Beach Lifeguard’s Quick Action Saves Teen Caught in Rip Current
A potentially dangerous situation turned into a powerful reminder of the importance of beach safety thanks to the quick response of one of our dedicated lifeguards.
Earlier this week, a 15-year-old boy was caught in a rip current while swimming offshore. Recognizing the signs of distress, our on-duty lifeguard Anthony Hernandez immediately entered the water and reached the swimmer within moments. Using calm instruction and trained rescue techniques, the lifeguard was able to safely guide the teen out of the current and back to shore.
The teen was evaluated on the beach, and no further medical treatment was needed.
Rip currents can form quickly and are often difficult to recognize, even for strong swimmers. This successful rescue highlights the lifesaving training, vigilance, and professionalism of our lifeguards, who work every day to keep our beaches safe.
We’re grateful for Anthony's swift action—and we remind beachgoers to always swim near a lifeguard, stay alert to posted conditions, and know what to do if caught in a rip current.
A life saved and a hero on duty. 🌊💛Thank you Anthony!
