At 2056 hrs crews were alerted to smoke in the area of the Roger F Duffy Viaduct. Upon arrival, crews found a campfire underneath the viaduct where someone was burning wire to eliminate the insulation to scrap the metal. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and eliminated harm to the viaduct and immediate area. Once extinguished, the wire was removed from the area, the viaduct was deemed safe, and crews returned safely in service.

The siren at the Verona Fire Department is currently out of commission. During last weeks windstorm, the siren stopped working. After an evaluation from a certified electrician, it was determined that a power surge damaged the siren and its controls.
We are working towards steps to rectify this damage. As this siren and controls are 50+ years old, a repair is unlikely and we are working on a strategy for a replacement.

The siren is not only integral to alert the public of an emergency response, it is also utilized for emergency disaster, which is why it is paramount to restore its operation.

As we evaluate our options, we ask the public to remain vigilant. Be aware of responders with flashing blue lights that may be responding to the station for an emergency call, as well as the sirens from fire apparatus answering emergency needs within our community as well as assisting our neighbors. We will provide updates as they become available.

🔴PSA to all Verona residents:🔴

We urge all able residents to dig out a fire hydrant near your home. Hydrants are an essential tool we use during a structure fire to secure a water supply. Digging it out ourselves can take away valuable time and could pose a serious safety hazard to responders during searches and fire attack. If anyone has any questions, feel free to message us.
