Since Penn Hills 224- Point Breeze and the former (Universal) Penn Hills 226 merged with their members we thought it was only right that we would take a moment and remember Joseph J. Craft.

On September 3, 2002, Firefighter Craft had returned earlier in the evening from his first night of Essentials of Firefighting training. Later that night, firefighters were dispatched to the report of a structural fire during an electrical storm. Firefighter Craft responded as a member of the crew of a support truck. The report of fire ended up to be a malfunctioning garage door opener in a house that had been struck by lightning. As the truck returned to the station, firefighters in the vehicle saw Firefighter Craft lay his head against the side of the truck and assumed that he was sleeping. Upon their arrival back at the station, they discovered that Firefighter Craft was unresponsive. Paramedics were called to the scene and an AED was applied. Despite these efforts, Firefighter Craft could not be revived and was pronounced dead on September 4, 2002.

The first day of school is fast approaching for the Penn Hills School District! Students are heading back on Wednesday, August 19th!

We wanted to take a moment to remind the community:
1) Adhere to all posted speed limits in and around the district.
2) Remember that morning and afternoon traffic patterns will be busier with school drop offs and pick ups.
3) When you see the stop sign and the red flashing lights on a school bus…Stop and never attempt to pass a school bus.

Have a great year, Penn Hills!

This morning 8/6/26 was a unique start to the day. Crews responded to Penn Hills Community Park for a contractor that struck a low pressure gas line in the woods. It was determined to be a private gas well line and the Penneco Services responded quickly and shut the line down.

At 19:49pm (7:49pm) 8/2/2026 a few firefighters were hanging out for the evening at the station when a loud noise was heard, the telephone poles and wires started shaking and the power flickered at the station.
A member went to investigate the noise and noticed white smoke up the street from the station. 224 Deputy radioed into County 911 with a fire unknown.
Once on scene with Eng. 2, 224 Deputy advised county of the call to wires down and entangled in a tree branch infront of the 700 block of 6th Street. DLQ was notified with extreme importance as there were residents in the home and were advised by Eng. 2's PA system to stay in the home and away from the front door as wires had landed on their metal railing, with flames and sparking wires in the yard.
Once DLQ arrived to cut the lines, firefighters were able to enter the yard and extingush the fires. We also checked the home with the thermal imaging camera for extentions.
All was clear.
