Recently, several members of our department had the honor of participating in and graduating from the Virginia Fire Officer Academy(VFOA) and the Virginia Chief Officer Academy(VCOA), held at the University of Richmond.

These highly respected leadership programs are recognized throughout Virginia's fire service and beyond. Held annually, both academies feature a rigorous and highly competitive selection process.

Throughout the week, participants were challenged through intensive leadership development, personnel management training, physical fitness sessions beginning at 6:00 a.m., and classroom discussions and presentations that often continued until 9:00 p.m. Each program is designed to prepare current and future fire service leaders to effectively navigate the real-world challenges facing today's fire service.

Our department remains committed to supporting professional development opportunities like these and is proud to have staff represented in these prestigious programs. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the families who supported these members during their week away.

Please join us in congratulating this year's graduates:

Lieutenant Andrew Richardson – Virginia Fire Officer Academy (VFOA)
Division Chief of Training Colten Lotts – Virginia Chief Officer Academy (VCOA)
Deputy Chief Chris Shaver – Administrative/Finance Section Chief, Virginia Chief Officer Academy (VCOA)

Congratulations to each of these leaders on this outstanding accomplishment and thank you for your continued dedication to our department and community!

Recruit Class 14 recently had the opportunity to participate in a Landing Zone (LZ) training class hosted by PHI Air Medical Shenandoah Valley - AirCare 5. During this hands-on experience, recruits learned how to safely establish and manage a helicopter landing zone, communicate effectively with flight crews, and better understand the critical role air medical transport plays in patient care.

This valuable training will help prepare them for their upcoming 24-hour shift day, where they will put these skills into practice during realistic emergency response scenarios.

A special thank you to the AirCare 5 crew for sharing their knowledge, experience, and professionalism with our recruits. Partnerships like these help ensure the next generation of EMS and fire-rescue professionals is prepared to serve their communities with confidence and excellence.

Sometimes the most memorable calls are the ones that bring new life into the world.

This past winter, ACFR members had the privilege of helping a family welcome their newest addition when a baby girl decided she wasn't going to wait for the hospital.

Ashley Brown, Connor Hensley, James Eavey, and Dalton Breeden provided exceptional care to both mother and baby during the delivery, ensuring they were safe, healthy, and ready for the next step of their journey. The crew even made sure Dad was able to share in the special moment by cutting the umbilical cord before transport.

We proudly recognize these members for their professionalism, compassion, and calm presence during what can be an unexpected and stressful situation. Thanks to their dedication and skill, a beautiful baby girl made her entrance into the world surrounded by caring hands.

Congratulations to the family, and thank you to our crew for making a lasting difference on such a special day.
