BEACON, NY - Members of US Coast Guard Auxiliary D1SR, Division 6, were on the water and the shore to cover the 18th Annual Hudson River swim on July 30, 2022. Starting at 9:45am, 170 swimmers and 90 support kayaks set out from the Newburgh Riverfront Marina on route to the Beacon Institute dock. All swimmers and support kayaks made it safely across within 90 minutes of the start.
On the river, Paul Scoca, Paul Soden and Charlie Fitzpatrick manned a facility from the Tarrytown flotilla for a safety patrol, in coordination with local authorities. The objective was to maintain a clear channel for the swimmers. No incidents on the water were reported.
On the Beacon shore, Adrienne Davies, James Calbo, Michael Foley, and Matt Duteau staffed a PA table to interact with the public. Along with directing swimmers to the reception area, the Auxiliarists were on hand to discuss membership, marine safety, and paddlecraft safety. More than half of the 90 kayakers were engaged, with over 50 sets of paddle reflectors and orange “IF FOUND” decals distributed.
The event marked the first combined Auxiliary event for Division 6 since the pandemic and the first event in the northern half of Division 6’s Area Of Responsibility since its expansion in 2020. Bravo Zulu to all the Auxiliarists in attendance!
