US Coast Guard Auxiliary Verplanck 6-4

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Verplanck 6-4 We serve to promote Recreational Boating Safety and marine awareness to the Eastern Hudson Valley

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian uniformed volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard. Congress established the unit on June 23, 1939, as the United States Coast Guard Reserve. On February 19, 1941, the organization was re-designated as the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Auxiliary exists to support all USCG missions on the water or in the air, except for

roles that require direct law enforcement or military engagement. Collectively the Auxiliary contributes over 4.5 million hours of service each year and completed nearly 500,000 missions in service to support the Coast Guard. Every year Auxiliarists help to save approximately 500 lives, assist 15,000 distressed boaters, conduct over 150,000 safety examinations of recreational vessels, and provide boater safety instruction to over 500,000 students.

BEACON, NY - Members of US Coast Guard Auxiliary D1SR, Division 6, were on the water and the shore to cover the 18th Annual Hudson River swim on July 30, 2022. Starting at 9:45am, 170 swimmers and 90 support kayaks set out from the Newburgh Riverfront Marina on route to the Beacon Institute dock. All swimmers and support kayaks made it safely across within 90 minutes of the start.

On the river, Paul Scoca, Paul Soden and Charlie Fitzpatrick manned a facility from the Tarrytown flotilla for a safety patrol, in coordination with local authorities. The objective was to maintain a clear channel for the swimmers. No incidents on the water were reported.

On the Beacon shore, Adrienne Davies, James Calbo, Michael Foley, and Matt Duteau staffed a PA table to interact with the public. Along with directing swimmers to the reception area, the Auxiliarists were on hand to discuss membership, marine safety, and paddlecraft safety. More than half of the 90 kayakers were engaged, with over 50 sets of paddle reflectors and orange “IF FOUND” decals distributed.

The event marked the first combined Auxiliary event for Division 6 since the pandemic and the first event in the northern half of Division 6’s Area Of Responsibility since its expansion in 2020. Bravo Zulu to all the Auxiliarists in attendance!

Never in the history of the United States has a woman led a branch of the armed forces. Today Adm. Linda Fagan made history. Congratulations to the new Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard.

We can't stress enough why it is important to have an "IF FOUND" decal on paddlecraft. In many cases, a vacant paddlecraft will initiate a search and rescue by local authorities and the USCG, costing tens of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money on fuel and man hours. Contact us to get stickers for your paddlecraft today!

Stop by and visit Town Hall as we make some updates and renovations. For many years, we had a Veteran’s display in the Nyberg Meeting Room. It is now located in the hallway outside the Supervisor’s office. Our local Veteran’s have donated the uniforms and items and as always, we THANK ALL VETERANS for their service!

In the coming weeks we will continue to spruce up the corridors of Town Hall and will feature artwork from our talented local artists.

Just… a little… tight… 🤣

Are you ready for boating season? This weekend might be a great time to pull out your life jackets and inspect for wear, tear, and buoyancy.

Life jacket styles, fit, care tips, and more: https://safeboatingcampaign.com/life-jackets/

Fact for the day: Life jackets have no expiration date, however, all life jackets should be tested for wear and buoyancy at least once a year. Waterlogged, faded, or otherwise damaged life jackets should be discarded.

Remember one of our most important messages is always wear a life jacket while underway!
