Woodford County Conservation District Your local partner in natural resource conservation. Welcome! A growing nation such as ours puts strong demands on our natural resources.

Our mission is to promote the conservation of land and aquatic resources in a developed environment through stewardship, education, and technical assistance. With increasing markets for our raw materials, pressure is placed on our agricultural farmland to produce the crops necessary to meet these demands. At the same time, other land uses are taking up large blocs of prime agricultural land each y

ear removing this land from production forever. Maintaining a sufficient amount of our natural resources for future generations, while providing the necessary elements for growth, places strong responsibilities on mankind. It is with the realization of the needs and problems concerning our natural resources that the Woodford County Conservation District strives to educate the public on protecting our environment. What we accomplish as individuals is minimum compared to what we have and can accomplish with united efforts. The Board of Supervisors holds general meetings on the Third Monday of every month; at 6:30pm November-March, 7pm April-October.

โ€ข Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) rewards producers for existing conservation and supports enhancements that take their stewardship to the next level.

Next in our series of Conservation Stories is Rusty Thompson!

Rusty Thompson, along with his wife Martha and their son Travis, steward hundreds of acres on both sides of Tyrone Pike, which includes the land that Rusty grew up farming. Rusty has coordinated food for the Conservation District's annual Spring Fling Awards banquet for years and can often be found volunteering his time with the local Cattlemen's Association.

State and federal conservation cost-share programs are available to land owners and land managers (tenants and operators are eligible) in Woodford County through the Woodford County Conservation District. Both of these funding opportunities aim to incentivize the adoption of best management practices on privately owned land.

๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ'๐ฌ ๐š "๐›๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐š๐ ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ž?"
They are practices that are proven to conserve natural resources (reduce soil erosion, decrease excess nutrient runoff/leaching, etc.). The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and Kentucky Division of Conservation have a long list of practices that are eligible for funding. The term can be misleading because every property and operation is different. What is "best" for one context is not always best for another.

If you are interested in either of these funding opportunities, there are three basic steps:
1. setup farm records with the Farm Service Agency office located in our building if you have not already.
2. submit a request for technical assistance to our office and wait for someone to reach out about scheduling a site visit.
3. explore available programs and practices that address the specific natural resource concerns on your property and submit an application as appropriate.

Application deadlines are in the fall, and notification of funding is delivered the following year. These are competitive programs and funding is not guaranteed. However, applications can be resubmitted. If you are interested in the state or federal cost-share, don't wait! Contact our office and start the process or reach out with any questions.

Krista Lea has had a big impact on soil and water conservation in Woodford County for only having lived and farmed here for 5 years. Aside from operating Texata Farms with her husband Russell, Krista works as an Extension Specialist with the University of Kentucky where she provides practical solutions and information to forage producers in Kentucky (and beyond!). Through her management of the Pasture Evaluation Program, Krista has positively impacted thousands of acres of pastureland in Woodford County by helping horse farms mitigate toxic tall fescue, increase pasture productivity, conservatively manage soil nutrients, and develop grazing management plans.

It is the Woodford County Conservation District's 80th anniversary and we are continuing our series of Conservation Success Stories this week with our Board Chair, Michael Duckworth!

Michael Duckworth has been on the Woodford County Conservation District's Board of Supervisors since 2023. As a past Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent with the Woodford County Cooperative Extension Service, he helped farmers balance production and conservation objectives for 16 years, but he has been actively engaged in natural resource conservation his whole life. Michael has transferred the conservation ethic that he learned growing up farming in Harrison County, KY to his family's farm on Shannon Run Rd. in Woodford County.

The Young Conservationist Council is an opportunity for Woodford Countians between the ages of 14 and 29 to engage with their local Conservation District and help direct how we conserve natural resources in this county for another 80+ years. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about their Conservation District and meet like-minded people, but, most importantly, the Conservation District staff and board supervisors are poised to listen to the next generation of conservationist. Whether you are passionate about farming, water resources, wildlife, soil or plants, there is a place at the table for you.
