Woodford County Conservation District

Woodford County Conservation District Welcome! A growing nation such as ours puts strong demands on our natural resources.

Our mission is to promote the conservation of land and aquatic resources in a developed environment through stewardship, education, and technical assistance. With increasing markets for our raw materials, pressure is placed on our agricultural farmland to produce the crops necessary to meet these demands. At the same time, other land uses are taking up large blocs of prime agricultural land each y

ear removing this land from production forever. Maintaining a sufficient amount of our natural resources for future generations, while providing the necessary elements for growth, places strong responsibilities on mankind. It is with the realization of the needs and problems concerning our natural resources that the Woodford County Conservation District strives to educate the public on protecting our environment. What we accomplish as individuals is minimum compared to what we have and can accomplish with united efforts. The Board of Supervisors holds general meetings on the Third Monday of every month; at 6:30pm November-March, 7pm April-October.

Weโ€™re now accepting applications for $310 million in funding through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program. This year we've streamlined and simplified RCPP to ease the burden on employees and partners, and to maximize flexibility, and weโ€™re looking for projects that prioritize one or more of the following priorities:

๐ŸšœLand management that improves land health, enhances resource management, and promotes sustainable agriculture and long-term protection of agricultural, grassland, and forestland viability;

๐ŸŒฑ Soil health projects using practices that focus on minimizing soil disturbance, maximizing soil cover, increasing natural vitality, and maintaining living roots throughout the year;

๐Ÿ“ก Precision agriculture projects that use technology to target conservation efforts based on specific field conditions, potentially reducing costs and improving resource efficiency;

๐ŸŒฝ Farmer-focused projects that provide financial assistance and/or technical expertise for planning and practice designs in support of producer contracts; and

๐Ÿฆ… Projects led by Indian Tribes.

Many farmers are finishing up their first hay harvest of the year: Cutting, tedding, raking and baling.

What does hay have to do with conservation you might be wondering... well, p๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘›๐‘›๐‘–๐‘Ž๐‘™ ๐‘“๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘’ ๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘’ ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘ก ๐‘ ๐‘œ๐‘–๐‘™ ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฃ๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘œ๐‘™๐‘  ๐‘ค๐‘’ โ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ฃ๐‘’!

Perennial forage crops have living roots in the ground year 'round. Their roots stabilize soil, create food and habitat for soil organisms, and slowly build organic matter. Their leaves protect the soil surface from the impacts of rain, hoof traffic and other forces as they fuel root activity through photosynthesis. Forage crops contribute to greater soil nutrient and moisture storage, and they also filter surface water runoff. All of these functions provide services on and off the farm.

Woodford County is fortunate to have many thousands of acres of pastureland that serve a variety of ๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐œ functions.

A pollinator strip is an intentional planting of plants that provides food and shelter for pollinators and birds. Habitat such as this is most effective when it includes a diversity of plants that will flower throughout the growing season, therefor providing nectar for a longer period of time.

There are many different ways to establish pollinator habitat, but the first step should always be competition control. In this case, we used a non-selective herbicide to kill the existing lawn. We then broadcast a mix of native forbs and grasses over the ground, when we knew that soil moisture was going to be adequate, and used a rake to improve seed to soil contact. Last week, with the help of the High School Environmental Club, we transplanted several dozen native plants that had already been started to help ensure that we will have something to show earlier than we would otherwise. These plants will also help hold the soil and provide cover from rain while everything begins to grow. Establishing native pollinator habitat is generally a slow process, so expectations must be adjusted but the benefits are well worth the wait.

Want to talk about establishing pollinator habitat or learn about funding opportunities? Stop by the Ag. Resource Building and we will get you connected with what you need to succeed!
