ACHIEVE

ACHIEVE Thankfully not everyone shared this philosophy. The first programs were offered by volunteer teachers in donated space in a church basement.

ACHIEVE, a Chapter of The Arc New York, is the premier provider of services to individuals with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities in Broome, Chenango and Tioga Counties and has proudly been a part of this community for 70 years. A Brief History of ACHIEVE
More than sixty years ago it was a common practice for children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities to be pl

aced in state institutions. Those families who chose to keep their children at home were told that their children were not eligible for and could not benefit from an education, something to which every child is entitled. Ten brave families - Walter and Kathryn Baird, Clyde and Elsie Brown, Howard and Esther Hall, Siegfried and Jane Heierman, Harry and Roye Sall, George and Josephine Sheehe, Joseph and Esther Stuckert, Robert and Annette Sturdevant, Floyd and Marian Taylor, and Glenn and Marian Young - who wanted a better life for their children joined with another group of parents in New York State to establish the Broome County Association for Retarded Children so that their children could attend school, receive an education, and lead a productive life. In September of 1952 when this organization was established, ACHIEVE's founding families started out with nothing but a common goal and dream. Parents went door-to-door to collect donations, and in a few years these passionate families were able to establish a school program and summer camp for their children and other children in the community. ACHIEVE continued to grow as we merged with the Chenango ARC in September of 2016. Our organization welcomed 400 new program participants and over 100 new employees to the ACHIEVE family. ACHIEVE’s founding families had a vision for the future. Today ACHIEVE has grown into an twenty-nine-million dollar agency operating an array of services in thirty-one facilities for more than 2,200 individuals. These families were always thinking, planning, and working, and today ACHIEVE continues to live out its mission - As a chapter of NYSARC, Inc. it is the mission of ACHIEVE to advocate for an enhanced quality of life through skill advancement, inclusion, integration, and independence of persons with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities through services provided in Broome, Chenango and Tioga Counties.

Happy Memorial Day from all of us at ACHIEVE. ❤️🤍💙

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness have protected the freedoms we enjoy each day, and for that we are deeply grateful.

As we spend time with family, friends, and community this Memorial Day, we also take a moment to reflect on and recognize those who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Today and always, we honor the fallen, remember their sacrifice, and extend our gratitude to all who have served.

Earlier this month, Envisions Day Hab had the honor of participating in the Three Sisters Garden Ceremony at Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center, Inc. . 🌱

This event marks another step in our growing partnership, and we are excited to continue building connections through assisting with the gardens and many more opportunities to come. We are grateful to be part of such a meaningful community effort that brings people together through nature, learning, and collaboration.

We look forward to all that’s ahead! 💚

Earlier this week, our Chenango County Comm Hab group enjoyed a wonderful lunch trip to General Clinton Park in Bainbridge before heading over the hill to meet some new friends at Stable Hooves & Hands. 🐴☀️

Stable Hands and Hooves Farm is an amazing place that gives people with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to learn about animals, help care for them, and of course enjoy horseback riding. The owner has spent many years working in this field and combined her love of horses with her passion for helping people to create something truly special for our community.

Local businesses and organizations like this are so important in building inclusive communities and creating opportunities for everyone to have meaningful experiences, make connections, and try new things. We are so thankful for the warm welcome and can’t wait to visit again! ❤️

We are pleased to share the latest updates on the planned unification of ACHIEVE and The Arc Madison Cortland.

Effective May 18th, ACHIEVE began providing management services to The Arc Madison Cortland in the areas of Finance, Information Technology, Human Resources, Employment Services, and Self-Direction. We are excited to bring our leadership teams from these divisions together to begin integration activities and look forward to results that further demonstrate that we are stronger together.

This summer, we will also launch a strategic planning process, a critical step in our journey toward unification. By working together, ACHIEVE and The Arc Madison Cortland will establish a shared vision and direction for our future as one organization.

Over the next 30 days, we will begin a collaborative, inclusive process to select a name for the combined entity. It is our goal to have the people we support and the employees from both Chapters participate in a voting process to choose the name. We will provide an update on that outcome in our July Unification Update. To kick off the collaborative process, we will host a Q&A forum on June 24th to give our self-advocates, families, employees, and supporters the opportunity to ask questions about the planned unification. Additional communication, including registration details, will be shared later this month.

At this time, our targeted unification date is September 1st.
