Each kindergarten student at Clayton Ave. Elementary received a brand-new gift-wrapped book to open, enjoy and take home to add to their own growing library. These books were a gift from an anonymous donor...a secret Seuss if you will! Here are some photos of Mrs. Gorman's students reading their donated Dr. Seuss books.

CAE Fourth Graders Learn Budgeting Basics.

This morning, High School Visions Federal Credit Union In-School Financial Wellness Officer Corey Tomosky and Visions HS interns visited Clayton Ave. Elementary to give a financial education lesson to fourth graders.

Ms. Juozitis' and Ms. Kuhn's classes learned about the benefits of saving money, making smart decisions and wants vs. needs. Each student received $20 in play money and a list of items to decide whether to spend on, save for, or share (donate.)

These Golden Bears are getting money smart from the start!

A huge Golden Bear shoutout to Miranda Buckland, who has joined the Family Violence Prevention Council of Broome County. This is her first year at Clayton Ave and fourth year as a School Social Worker. One of our many goals at CAE is to continue to learn more about organizations, systems that can support or impact our families, and continue to provide trauma informed interventions.
Here is some more information regarding the Family Violence Prevention Council.

"The mission of the Council is to provide leadership to the community in its effort to reduce the incidence and severity of all forms of family violence. A largely professional volunteer organization with ten working subcommittees, it has devoted numerous hours to a wide variety of activities that focus coordination, advocacy, and education on the prevention and treatment of abuse and neglect and the corollary systems issues."

Clayton Ave. Elementary students of art teacher, Mrs. Ali, created a "Wicked" cool art display in the CAE lobby. Poppies made by every class are displayed throughout and hanging in front of the Emerald City. The Emerald City was created with cardboard boxes and painted by second and third grade classes. Third and fourth grade students created flying monkeys that hang from the ceiling and are posted to bulletin boards. Meanwhile, second and third grade students created the Emerald City and yellow brick road compositions. Mrs. Ali drew both Elphaba and Glinda boards, colored in by students. Then, students got to sign which team they belonged to, Team Pink or Team Green. Some students couldn't decide and signed both! Overall, it was a delight turning the lobby into a Wizard of Oz extravaganza that wowed the whole school!

Pen Pals Meet!

BTBOCES_New Visions Education Academy students, including three Vestal High School Seniors, visited their first-grade pen pals in Ms. Lilley's class this morning. They've been sending letters to each other since the start of the school year and were excited to meet each other for the first time. Today, the pen pals played games together and read books that the HS students then gifted the kids.

Yesterday, author Sarah Weeks visited Clayton Ave. Elementary to share the inspiration behind her books and talk about what it's like to be a writer. Thank you to CAPTO, who bought over 30 of Ms. Weeks' books for a book raffle. The kids earned tickets to try and win a book. Families also ordered books and Ms. Weeks autographed around 100 of them while she was there!

Golden Bears welcomed their special guest with creative signs, as well as "pies!" Art teacher, Mrs. Ali had some classes create lions and pies, themes of two of Sarah Weeks' books.

Clayton Ave. Elementary second graders in Miss Rose's class are currently studying place value and numbers in different forms. On Friday, students worked in groups to remove and count the seeds in four pumpkins in their classroom. They made groups of ten and then bundled ten tens into hundreds to count their seeds more efficiently. When finished, they wrote the number of seeds in standard form, unit form, word form, expanded form, and as place value disks. This year, there was a pumpkin with 978 seeds inside of it! Miss Rose has been teaching for ten years, and that's a record among all the pumpkins studied during that time!

Clayton Ave. Elementary Golden Bears had a chance to go in a fire truck this morning! Their fire safety presentation was on Monday, but they couldn't get an up-close look at the truck because it rained. Today's weather was perfect for climbing aboard!

Shoutout to Mrs. Braman and Mrs. Gorman for going up in the bucket! Their students cheered them on from below.
