Vestal Volunteer Emergency Squad, Inc.

Vestal Volunteer Emergency Squad, Inc. Providing ambulance services to Vestal, NY & Broome County since 1976. Over 120 residents responded from a variety of backgrounds to become original members.

We are organization consisting of volunteers supplemented with paid staff to provide medical care to the residents of Vestal, NY and Broome County. History:

Prior to 1976, emergency services in Vestal were delivered by the Vestal Police Department. Terry Beishline foresaw the need for a volunteer emergency squad that could deliver skilled patient care. He, along with five others, Rich Williams, D

ave Bennett, Brian Mather, and Chuck & Cheryl Greene, founded what has since been known as the Vestal Volunteer Emergency Squad. Each founding member was in charge of a specific subject area to be researched, such as: training and recruitment, communications, exploring ambulance types, and recruiting volunteers. It was determined that at least 80 people would be needed to run a full-time ambulance service. Training courses were developed and implemented and VVES received NYS certification on April 1, 1976; we were officially open for service. In January 1976, an Emergency Medical Technician course was offered for VVES members, and by October 1977 we had 90 EMT’s, 30 IV Technicians, 8 Cardiac Care Technicians, and 100 total members certified in CPR. The Union Volunteer Emergency Squad played a key role in the start up of VVES’ Heartmobile. With training and support provided by UVES, Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians III from Vestal could now offer Advanced Life Support services to the community in the form of a Heartmobile.

We’re saddened to hear the news that Dave Hitt has passed away. Dave was no stranger to our community, he was a friendly face many of us came to recognize through the years, showing up on numerous EMS and fire scenes.

Dave’s contributions and kindness made a difference, and his absence will be deeply felt by many in this community. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

His family has created a GoFundMe page, if you would like to donate, the link is below:

A familiar face across the Southern Tier, known for his flag, his camera, and his kindness, has passed away.

*IMPORTANT TRAVEL NOTICE FROM DOT*

The Route 17 Approach Slabs project began nightwork on July 23, 2026.

This project will replace the deteriorating bridge approaches on four bridges that carry Route 17 over Vestal Road and over the Susquehanna River in the towns of Union and Vestal in Broome County.

During construction, work will be either on the two westbound bridges or the two eastbound bridges, and vehicle traffic will be crossed over to the opposite side. Once the crossovers are in place, traffic will be restricted to a single travel lane in each direction through the work zone. This pattern is expected to be implemented by the end of August and be in place throughout the fall.

Additionally, during construction, both northbound and southbound State Route 26 entrance ramps to State Route 17 East are scheduled for closure while work is underway. A signed detour route will direct vehicles to Route 434 east and Route 201 north to Exit 70 eastbound on-ramp to 17 East.

When the eastbound bridges are under construction, the Exit 68 Eastbound ramp to Vestal Road will be closed. Signage will inform drivers on Route 17 of this closure and also of a 10 ft lane width restriction within the work zone.

Route 26 ramps to Route 17 Eastbound are scheduled to close to traffic on July 31, 2026.

Motorists should expect significant delays during the project. They are advised to allow additional time and follow temporary traffic changes and detours throughout construction. We appreciate the public’s patience as we conduct this important work.

Please contact the Regional NYSDOT Office at 607-721-8116 if you have any questions or concerns.
