To supplement a lab on preventing bird collisions with windows, students in Mrs. Emmons’ Biology class researched and made models of different bird species as part of the Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene project. Students used upcycled cloth and donated materials to handcraft life-sized bird sculptures. Each artwork commemorates a real bird that lost its life after hitting glass — and connects each crafter with a bird species at risk of building collisions.

All of the artworks will be sent to the project headquarters and sewn together into a 300-foot-long “carpet” of birds that will travel the country as an educational art installation, raising awareness about the toll of building collisions on our bird populations. The full project will take 4 to 6 years, with a likely completion date of 2029. Students will also be researching solutions to prevent bird collisions and increase biodiversity.

Yesterday, 27 Vestal Middle School 8th graders walked into Binghamton University and did something pretty remarkable. After just a few months of prep, they presented in front of a panel of teachers, professors, and language experts in Spanish, French, Telugu, Arabic, Punjabi, and Hebrew. Some of them did it twice. In two different languages. 🤯

Vestal is the only district in New York State currently running the Jr. Seal of Biliteracy program at the middle school level, and days like yesterday are exactly why that matters. Huge credit to our world language teachers, ENL teachers, and leaders across the district for making this possible. 👏

The students also got a private campus tour from BU's student ambassadors. Not a bad way to spend a Thursday.

Frozen Jr. wrapped up this past weekend at Vestal Middle School, and we're pretty sure Mother Nature was in the audience. If you've stepped outside this week, you know exactly what we mean. 🥶

66 cast and crew members brought the magic of Frozen Jr. to life across three packed showings, earning rave reviews from Superintendent Cliff and audiences who filled every seat. We even had special guest cameos from talented young performers representing Vestal Hills Elementary School, Glenwood Elementary School, Clayton Avenue Elementary School, and Tioga Hills Elementary School, proving that the performing arts spirit runs strong across the entire district!

The cast, crew, and directors poured everything into this production, and it showed. Vestal is so proud of every single student who stepped on that stage. 🎭❄

Building Skills and Confidence.

Vestal Middle School is where physical education is meeting construction. During this school year, VMS has started a new partnership that brings the hands-on world of building directly into the Adaptive Physical Education (APE) environment.

This journey started with a spark of inspiration from C&K Construction, whose early mentorship set Physical Education teacher Larry Williams on a path toward integrating vocational skills with physical movement. That led to the involvement of the Johnson City Home Depot, who generously donated the essential tools and materials needed to turn the vision into reality.

At the heart of this project is VMS student, James. With the donated supplies, James is leading the way in bringing tactile, constructive projects into the Adaptive Physical Education setting. This initiative is not just about tools; it is about a "whole student" approach to learning, that incorporates, fine and gross motor skills, applied mathematics, problem solving, and confidence building.

James and Mr. Williams are currently hard at work on a few small projects. These initial builds serve as their "proof of concept." If those projects go as well as they anticipate, they have big plans for the next phase. Their goal is to go to Home Depot to discuss a long-term vision, which is to create a long-term library of tools and materials. They want to ensure that this is not a one-time project, but a sustainable resource for future students to explore the connection between movement, math, and skilled trades within Adaptive Physical Education.

A heartfelt thank you to C&K Construction and Home Depot for your inspiration, guidance and generosity in equipping James and the APE program with the tools to succeed!
