Today we remember Lee Barta who was murdered in the line of duty 31 years ago while serving with the Binghamton Police Department. Lee’s memory and commitment to service lives on through his son Dan Barta who works with the Town of Vestal Police Department. Officer D. Barta is our lead peer support officer, heading our officer wellness program and has become an important part of our SRO program, working in our middle school.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of retired Police Chief John Butler.

John Butler served as Chief of Police for the Vestal Police Department from March 13th, 2006, until December 31st, 2021. During his tenure, he was a friend, mentor, and leader to all who served the Town of Vestal.

Our thoughts are with Chief Butler's friends, family, and loved ones during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Chief. Your service, dedication, and leadership will never be forgotten.

Celebrate the life of John Butler and join others in sharing memories, stories, and condolences.
