We are excited to welcome Andy Martin as one of our new board members. We can't wait to see the impact that his leadership and love for the Lord brings. Here is a brief bio on Andy:

Andy entered the financial services industry immediately upon graduating with honors from Birmingham-Southern College. He spent 32 years at First Protective as a sales manager and leading personal producer until being promoted to President. He served as President for 19 years and then went into early retirement. He recently purchased an existing agency which he renamed Providence Benefits. He is married and has three grown children.

"Our hope is not that we will live a pain-free life, but that God will always be with us, and He won't leave us nor forsake us in the middle of our suffering."

2021 will come with new challenges and in many ways it already has. It's important to understand that God will be with us in the storm, and He will be with us through the storm. Our comfort doesn't come from our circumstances, but it comes from trusting that Christ will always be with us.

Do Not Fear. Only Believe.|Young Business Leaders

"We can be tempted to give way to fear, but Jesus wants us to believe. Most specifically, He wants us to believe in Him, that He is God and has the power to raise the dead or bring us through suffering and death safely into His presence."

This is a short excerpt from this week's YBL blog post. Rob specifically takes a look back at the year 2020 and looks at how God was continuously faithful to teach and work in his own life amidst the struggles. Take some time to see how God worked in his life this past year by reading this week's blog.

Do Not Fear. Only Believe. by Rob Genin | Jan 7, 2021 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Did you know that dozens of studies have confirmed that a lack of significant relationships in your life is more dangerous to your health than alcoholism, obesity, or smoking? At YBL, we are dedicated to helping men in the marketplace find community. If you are interested in finding out more about our small groups, reach out to our Birmingham director, Rob Genin ([email protected]). We would love to get you connected to a group.

This morning one of our small groups got to have their last meeting for the year! This group has been meeting every Thursday morning since June and have been going through a YBL's core curriculum called, "Concentrating on the Majors". We are thankful that we get the opportunity to study God's Word and do life together.

A recent business study conducted found that 68% of men wish that they had a mentor. A mentor can be a great resource and friend to help you navigate the challenges of balancing work and family life. At YBL, we have been matching people with mentors for the last 20 years, and we would love to match you with one. If you are interested in getting connected, reach out to our Birmingham director, Rob Genin ([email protected]).

Pursue Mature Manhood and Womanhood

During this season of Advent, I can confidently say one of the presents that the world, your wife, and your children need is the example of a man who will follow God at whatever the cost. Here’s a great article by John Piper that encourages us in that endeavor.

God created male and female to declare beautiful truths about himself. Compromising these distinctions does not make us better man and woman. It belittles his design.

Titus 3:4-6 - 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior

Take this Advent season to really focus on the coming of Christ. It's because of his "appearance" and sacrificial love for us, to the point of death on a cross, that we can be washed of our sin and enjoy the presence of God.

"There is so little that is permanent or secure in the world. One positive effect that has come from this year is that our false idols of comfort and security have been exposed and removed. We have misplaced our hope in the things of the world that constantly change. In contrast, our God never changes. “I do not change” (Malachi 3:5)."

Here is a brief quote from our new blog post for the week written by Rob Genin. It's easy to become downcast and hopeless when surrounded by a world where everything feels like it is going wrong. Rob discusses the source of fixed joy and hope in his new post. Take some time to visit our website and read the new blog. You'll be encouraged.

Lamentations 3:21-24

21 But this I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.”

What Mountain are You Climbing?

Come join YBL & Briarwood Church as we hear Eric Alexander, a professional climber and author, share about the victory we can find in helping others succeed. Eric has climbed the highest peaks on all seven continents, a feat known as the "Seven Summits".

More remarkably, in 2001 he helped his friend, Eric Weinheimer, become the first blind man to climb Mt. Everest. He has since helped Eric summit several other “highest” peaks and has authored a book, The Summit, which shares some of the lessons learned on their trips.

Today, Eric teaches disabled skiers in Vail, Colorado, and directs Adventures Beyond Limits, an organization that educates and encourages youth with disabilities in the outdoors. We hope you will join us as we learn more about how to overcome our limits together.

Good Leaders Embrace Their Limits

"If you’re a leader, you aren’t just a package of strengths, gifts, and experiences; you’re also a collection of weaknesses and susceptibilities. Here, the gospel offers such sweet encouragement. We don’t have to fear our limits, because God doesn’t send us out on our own; where he sends us, he goes too." - Paul Tripp

Weak or dysfunctional leadership communities fail to protect leaders from themselves.

If you are looking for a new book to read, then we recommend to you one of these.

Here's what our YBL Ministry Director, Phil Reddick, had to say about them: "Vision, leadership, second half, WWII, and essays on God. These books encouraged, motivated and caused me to think this past year. One theme that comes out of many of them, particularly Churchill, is to persevere. Let’s lead, serve and Finish Well."

This morning one our 2nd Half small groups met at Heatherwood Golf and Country Club. This group has been meeting for over 2 years, and they have continued to meet throughout COVID-19. Here is what Charles Yates, a member of the small group, had to say about it:

"I very much value the relationships with the men in our group. When I joined the group, I had just moved back to Birmingham and was grateful for the opportunity to renew friendships and make new ones. I found that we are all in our 2nd Half of life with the same needs, including our identity and life purpose. I have, by God's Grace, experienced a growing spiritual maturity through the study of God's Word and I absolutely look forward to our weekly meetings."

"We do not want to suffer. However, there are things in life which seem to require suffering as the price, and some for which that price is worth paying. Obedience to Jesus is worth suffering to learn."

Boys Should Be Boys: Raising Future Men and Women

Here is a brief article on the importance of fathering. We believe it will be encouraging and challenging for current fathers and soon-to-be fathers.

In a world of blurred distinctions between male and female, has it ever been more important to raise our boys to be men and our girls to be women?
